Zelda Mae Peyton

Zelda Mae Peyton, 89, of Colonial Beach passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at her residence.
She was the widow of Charles Edward Peyton.

A visitation was held Wednesday evening at Little Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove. A funeral was held Friday, March 22, with Pastor Earl T. Howerton Jr. officiating.

Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home in Lancaster is handling the arrangements.

Sally Rose Zimmerman

Sally Rose Chappelle Zimmerman, 96, of Colonial Beach passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Sally was born March 23, 1916, in Portsmouth. She lived and taught school in Alexandria from 1940 to 1975, when she moved to Potomac Shores, Colonial Beach. She was a graduate of Longwood College and a member of Colonial Beach Baptist Church and Women of the Moose.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Jett of Tennessee; granddaughter Jessica Jett of Pennsylvania; and grandson Wayne Brooks of Texas.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Zimmerman; and son Robert W. Zimmerman.

A memorial service was held Monday, March 25, at Colonial Beach Baptist Church.

David Joseph Shackelford

David Joseph Shackelford, 92, of King George County died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Hughes Home.

Mr. Shackelford was a World War II Navy Seabees veteran. He enjoyed traveling, auto racing and antiques restoration.
Mr. Shackelford co-owned Shackelford’s Garage with his son, Jerry.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Shackelford; son Jerry Shackelford (Delores); brother Richard Shackelford; three grandchildren, Carla Jones, Sandi Shackelford and Kris Shackelford; and three great-grandsons, Jacob Jones, William Jones and Samuel Shackelford. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Lyman, John, Enoch, Howard and French Shackelford.

The family received friends Friday, March 22, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

Charles Curtis Gaines, Jr.

Charles Curtis Gaines Jr., 66, of Chance passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at the Orchard in Warsaw.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Gaines; brother Nathan Gaines (Gloria) of Hustle; and sister Clara C. Gaines of Hustle.

A funeral was held Sunday, March 24, at Antioch Baptist Church in Champlain, with the Rev. Claude Tate officiating. Burial was in Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Chance.

Ralph Edward Dickerson

Ralph Edward Dickerson, 71, of King George, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013.

Born July 20, 1941 in Richmond, VA, he was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Margaret Dickerson.

He is survived by his brother Jerold “Jerry” (Susan) of James City County, VA; three nephews, Jay of Charleston, SC, and Brian and John both of New Kent County; a great nephew, Will, and a great niece, Bailey.

Ralph was a 1965 & 1966 graduate of Virginia Tech, with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. He was employed by and did research for the Navel Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA for more than 40 years.

Services were held at Bliley’s Funeral Home in Richmond, VA on Monday, March 25, 2013, followed by interment at Maury Cemetery.

Dennis Farron Fisher

Dennis Farron Fisher, 59, of King George County passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, at his home overlooking the Potomac.

Mr. Fisher was a general contractor for Fisher and Hall Builders for 35 years. He enjoyed time with family and friends and his home on the river.

Survivors include daughter Anne Stevenson; brothers Thomas P. Fisher Jr. and Larry M. Fisher; niece Holly Ellenwood; nephews Aaron Fisher, Matthew Thompson and Josh Thompson; former wife and devoted friend Terri Fisher; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Phillip and Florence Miller Fisher.

The family received friends Monday, March 25, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service was held Tuesday, March 26, at the funeral home chapel. Interment followed in Fletcher’s Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Melvin Lee Morgan

Melvin Lee Morgan, 51, of Marriottsville, MD, died Friday, March 22, 2013.

He was born Jan. 21, 1962. Melvin loved helping others, working outdoors, spending time on the river and being with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Colleen M. Morgan; and sons Thomas A. Morgan and Patrick D. Finn. Melvin is also survived by his father and stepmother, Alvin and Joan Morgan; and siblings Ronald “Peanut” Morgan, Susan Robey and Linda Whicker-LiCalzi.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol J. Morgan.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, at Grace United Methodist Church, Rollins Fork, with the Rev. Ted James officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Ruth Carmichael Morie

Ruth Carmichael Morie, 86, of King George County passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mrs. Morie was a member of Two Rivers Baptist Church. (She was a former member of Potomac Baptist Church, where she sang in and directed the choir.) Mrs. Morie was a farmer and had retired from the federal government.

Survivors include daughters Barbara Morie Howe (John), Dianne Morie Portner (Dale) and Vickie Morie Jordan (Karl); sister Ethel Little; and grandchildren Heather Dawn Howe, Ashley Howe Kave (Jake), Ryan Dale Portner and Joseph Franklin Jordan (Jaclyn).

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 29, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Potomac Baptist Church cemetery.

Patricia Smith McGinniss

Patricia Smith McGinniss, a longtime resident of King George County, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, March 22, 2013, surrounded by her family.

Born March 13, 1934, in Fredericksburg and raised in Falmouth, she graduated from James Monroe High School, Mary Washington College and received a Master of Education from the University of Virginia. Patricia taught school for many years at the Dahlgren base school, King George Elementary, and Colonial Beach school. After teaching, she was an assistant and then Voter Registrar of King George County for 21 years. Following retirement, she served on the Electoral Board and as an Officer of Election.

You may have been privileged to see her smile; she gave it often. Patricia was a giver. She was generous of her time, money, and love to her family, church, community and even those she never met. An active member of Falmouth, Shiloh, and finally Round Hill Baptist Church, she directed choir, taught Sunday school, led the YWAs, served as WMU President and as Sunday school superintendent. She enjoyed her Young at Heart Sunday school class. Following membership in the Junior Woman’s Club of Fredericksburg, she joined the GFWC Woman’s Club of King George--spending more than 50 years in volunteer community service. She was also active in the James Monroe Original Site Alumni Association.

She loved music, travel, time spent with family and friends, and her God. Her faith gave her courage to face her final illness and the confidence that she would be with her parents, Joseph and Edith Smith; husband Richard McGinniss; “brother” Orvid Powell; and many other family and friends who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her children, Katrina Minter (Ed), Kimberley Turner (Frank), Kevin McGinniss and Keith McGinniss (Tanya); sister Phyllis Dahlgren; special first cousin Jewel Weaver; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation was held Monday, March 25, at Nash and Slaw Funeral Home, King George. A service was held Tuesday, March 26, at Round Hill Baptist Church, with interment in Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Ted James and the Rev. Richard Headley officiated. A time of fellowship for family and friends followed in the Family Life Center at Shiloh Baptist Church.

Richard C. DeBernard

Richard Clarke DeBernard, 79, of King George County passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at his home.

Mr. DeBernard was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sara A. DeBernard; children Richard A. DeBernard, Van C. DeBernard, Gail D. Durham, Steven Bernardo DeBernard, Craig DeBernard, Robin DeBernard and Christopher DeBernard; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Robert and Joseph DeBernard; and sister Delores DeBernard.

A service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the DeBernard home, 11620 Lagrange Lane, King George, VA, 22485.

Mary Talley Ramsey

Mary Talley “Sable” Ramsey, a longtime resident of King George County, died Friday, March 15, 2013, at Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield.

She was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Sharon, PA, to eastern European immigrants George Sabol of Yugoslavia and Anna Bialka of Poland.

An R.N. by profession, she served the U.S. Army as a cadet nurse at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. It was there she met U.S. Army Lt. Robert V. Talley. They were married and, in 1953, moved to the Navy base at Dahlgren, where Bob was employed as civilian personnel director.

Sable was an instructor in the nursing assistant program at the Stafford Vocational School from 1968 until 1974, and was employed as a private duty nurse. She also served as a hospice and hospital volunteer.

She was preceded in death by husbands Robert V. Talley and Larry R. Ramsey; grandson Sean Eastwood; and special friend N. Richard Mountjoy.

Survivors include son Robert V. Talley Jr. (Joan); daughter JoAnne T. Eastwood (Joe); grandsons Matthew Eastwood (Julie), Justin Eastwood (Naomi) and Aaron Eastwood (Catie); eight great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Joseph, Thomas, Katheryn, Andrew, Liam, Ian and Talley; stepsons Larry Jr. and Bill Ramsey; and Joan Talley’s children, Tim, Karen and Laura.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Lucy Corr Village for their devoted care.

A service to celebrate Sable’s life will be held at a later date.

In keeping with her generous spirit, she donated her body to the Virginia Anatomical Society for research.

Martha J. Williams

Mrs. Martha J. Williams of Hephzibah, GA, entered into complete victory on Monday, March 18, 2013.
She was born to the late Paul Johnson and Martha Johnson.

Leaving to celebrate her life is her loving, devoted and loyal husband, Vernon Williams I, who was her high school sweetheart. They were married Nov. 22, 1972.

Through that union came their four devoted children, Tashara Harris (Joseph), Vernon Williams II (Linda), Martha “Della” Williams-Smith (Elton) and William Williams. She also leaves daughter-in-law Latonja Williams; 10 doting grandchildren, Daniel, Vernon III “LV,” DeVon, Tyler, Izriah “Izzy,” Iyanna “Yanni,” Mikayla, Brielle “Bri,” Alexander Houston and Alexander Mormant; brothers, Paul (Mozella) of Washington, D.C., and Robert (Ella) of King George County; sister Katherine of Charlottesville; her loving mother, Martha Johnson of King George; sisters-in-law Diane Johnson of Maryland and Phyllis Johnson (James) of Dahlgren; brothers-in-law, Calvin Williams (Jackie) and Ralph Williams (Janice) of Dahlgren, Wayne Williams of King George and Clyde Tyler of Washington, D.C.; four uncles; four aunts; two godchildren, Gerard Hunter and Bennie “Bishop” Carr; and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A viewing was held Tuesday, March 27, at Lee Funeral Home, 12005 James Madison Highway, King George.

Her home-going celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Greater Little Ark Baptist Church, 15681 Owens Drive, King George, VA, 22485.

George Gantt

George “Lloyd” Gantt, 86, of Colonial Beach passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013.

He was the beloved husband of Dorothy “Dot” Gantt; and the father of Albert Gantt of Colonial Beach and Jay Gantt of Petersburg. He is also survived by a sister, Rosemary May of Culpeper.

He was preceded in death by parents George and Ruth Gantt; and his brother, Frank Gantt.

The family received friends Monday, March 25, at Adams-Green Funeral Home, Herndon. The funeral was held Tuesday, March 26, in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery.

Donald Leigh Rumuly

Donald Leigh Rumuly, 83, of Spotsylvania County passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Rumuly was a graduate of Spotsylvania High School. He retired from FMC after 20 years and later retired from NSWC at Dahlgren. He was a lifetime member and deacon at Hebron Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ellen B. Rumuly; two children, Ernest Rumuly (Diane) and Robbin Griffin, all of Spotsylvania; two grandchildren, Scott Rumuly (Serena) and Dakota Griffin of Spotsylvania; great-granddaughter Taylor Rumuly of Spotsylvania; three brothers, Kenneth Rumuly of Fredericksburg, Vivian Rumuly (Diana) of Giddings, TX, and Maynard Rumuly (Margaret) of Spotsylvania; and numerous extended family.

He was preceded in death by great-grandson Gavin L. Rumuly; and his sister, Florence Faulk.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Hebron Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bob Ellinger, the Rev. Carol Markham and the Rev. James Fetty officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the interment in the fellowship hall.

Pallbearers will be Scott Rumuly, Bradley Griffin, Sherril Moore, Mike Loveless, Kevin Perry and Stewart Robbins. The Adult Men’s Sunday school class and deacons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
