Charles Clarke

Charles Clarke, 55, of Tappahannock passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at his residence.

A funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 13, at New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Caret.

Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home in Lancaster is handling the arrangements.

Alice Lacy Sanders

Alice Lacy Sanders, 83, of Fredericksburg went to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.

She was born Jan. 16, 1930, at Lacy Mill House in Spotsylvania County.

She was the daughter of William Otis Lacy and Lena Brooks Lacy and was one of 15 children. She had her first job as a teenager at F.W. Woolworth, where she met the love of her life.

Mrs. Sanders was a loving wife and a stay-at-home mother for many years. After proudly earning her GED, she worked in retail for Heel-N-Toe, J.C. Penney, the Scotsman and A&N stores in Fredericksburg.

She was a longtime member of Falmouth Baptist Church and an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Sanders is survived by her husband of 66 years, Charles Everette Sanders Sr. She is also survived by three sons and two daughters, Charles E. Sanders Jr. (Linda) of Lynchburg, Janice S. Bock (Cyrill) of Stafford County, David A. Sanders (Deborah), of King George County, Donald A. Sanders and wife Elizabeth of Stafford and Jeanenne L. Griffin of Stafford; sister Mary Lacy Byrd of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who all loved her dearly.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorials Processing Center, Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.

Mertine Whiting

Mertine Whiting, 74, of King George County passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.

Mertine was born in Caroline County, Virginia. She is now resting in the arms of the Lord.

She leaves to cherish loving memories, one son, Shelton Whiting, Baltimore, MD; two grandchildren, Shelton Whiting, Jr., and Charlena Peyton; four great-grandchildren; mother, Irene Whiting Jefferson of King George; three sisters, Phyllis Jackson (Willie), Julia Scranage (Perry), Marva Smith (Hugh); six brothers, Kelly Jefferson (Ernestine), Wilson D. Jefferson (Barbara), Oliver Jefferson (Brenda), Stanley Jefferson (Adrian), Harold Jefferson (Pamela), and Darrell Jefferson; five aunts, Dorothy Washington, Mabel Yancey, Helen Johnson and two special aunts, Winnie B. Pryor, Gladys Pryor; a host of nieces and nephews. She was fond of her many cousins that grew up around her. Phyllis and Willie were her caregivers and they both were a strong tower of inspiration in her life.

Mertine was never without a smile or a compliment for those that approached her. She had an eye for fashion and was quick to compliment. She enjoyed going to the Rappahannock Area on Aging in King George where she loved to do crafts and other activities that made her happy.

She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal. Burial will be private. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

Mabel Irene Todd

Mabel Irene Todd, 85, of Colonial Beach passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach.

Mabel was born in Alexandria on April 1, 1927, and married Wilmer F. Todd Sr. on Aug. 8, 1946.

Mabel worked as a school crossing guard for the Fairfax County Police Department for more than 22 years. She was also actively involved with the Democratic Party and was a member of the Methodist Church in Colonial Beach.

Mabel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Wilmer F. Todd Sr.; her son, Wilmer “Micky” Todd Jr. (Pam); four grandchildren, Leslie Hanson, Michael Todd (Wendy), Kris Baxter (Meghan), and Jessica McBride (Todd); 11 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her daughter, Cindy Baxter and her husband, Roger.

A service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Melvin Drayton

Melvin Drayton, 69, of King George County died Feb. 4, 2013.

A funeral was held Feb. 9, at First Baptist Church of Ambar in King George. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by Campbell Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.

Garlin Howard, Sr.

Garlin “Tush” Howard Sr., 77, of King George County passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He was born in Clayton, GA, but lived in King George for most of his life. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and worked for both VDOT and the King George County public school system for 30 years. He was an avid fisherman and loved being outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Howard; his children, Sheila Franklin, Doris Howard and Garlin Howard Jr.; his grandchildren, Scott and Aaron Franklin; and his siblings, Ross and Reed Howard and Ola Mae Brown.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at Round Hill Baptist Church in King George.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Round Hill Baptist Church.

Charles Gordon Williams

Charles “Charlie” Gordon Williams, 82, of King George County passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at home.
Charles was born in Passapatanzy on Oct. 14, 1930. He had retired after 25 years of service with VDOT, and was a member of Fletcher’s Chapel United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the White Oak Volunteer Fire Department.

Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Polly Williams; his second wife, Christine M. Williams; his parents, T. Wray and Daisy H. Williams; brother Thomas Williams Jr.; and a nephew, Kenneth W. Williams.

Survivors include two daughters, DonnaMarie Dent of Petersburg and Cathy D. Doggett of Fredericksburg; a son, C. Dennis Williams (Phyllis), of Fredericksburg; brother Herbert Williams (Marie), of King George; a stepdaughter, Anita F. Butler of King George; a stepson, Garland Fenwick of Falmouth; his nephews, Dale Williams, Roger Williams (Michelle) and Brian Williams (Carol), all of King George; his constant companion, Fred the beagle; and his granddogs, Willie and Chewy.

The family received friends Thursday, Feb. 7, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

Nicholas E. Stepaniak

Nicholas E. “Nick” Stepaniak, 31, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at his home in Spotsylvania County following a courageous battle with cancer.

Nick was a man of great character who was driven by the desire to serve. He was born in New Jersey where, as a young adult, he found his passion for public service while volunteering as an EMT, and later in Myrtle Beach, SC, where he served as the assistant EMT chief. Nick then moved to Fredericksburg with his wife, Brandy, to be closer to family and began his career at the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

He pursued his passion to serve by becoming the assistant manager for the Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Communications /911. In 2010, Nick was recognized and received national honors for his work, receiving the National Training Coordinators Award through the Association of Public-Safety Communications International Inc.

Nick’s can-do attitude was far and above the best. Even during his worst days while receiving chemo, he faced his health challenges head-on. The impact Nick has left in Stafford was what one would expect to see from the greatest of men. He was, in the eyes of his public safety family, a most dedicated and hardworking individual. Always contributing. Always moving forward. Always wanting to help others. Always wanting to do more.

Nick loved life and touched the lives of many who were blessed to know him. His optimism through adversity was a testament to his character. He had a positive impact on everyone he came in contact with. He was driven by the desire to help others.

Nick was a devoted and caring husband, son, brother and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Brandy; dog Jersey; parents Walter and Lubow; sisters Vera and Christine; grandmother Daria; godmother Irene; mother- and father-in law Marion and Luke; godson Mykola; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; and the entire Stafford County 911 Center family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his uncle Jurij; and his godfather, John.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery Mausoleum.

A reception will follow at the Stafford County Public Safety Center, 1225 Courthouse Road, Stafford, VA, 22554.

Kenneth W. Cornwell

Kenneth W. Cornwell, 78, of Hartwood passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at VCU Medical Center.
He worked for the federal government as a supervisor at Fort Belvoir’s golf course.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty; two sons, Denneth Cornwell (Denise), of Ruther Glen and Pete Cornwell (June), of Colonial Beach; his daughter, Bonnie Terrell (Ed), of Fredericksburg; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth.

Kenneth’s family received friends Thursday, Feb. 7, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, followed by funeral and interment in Stafford Memorial Gardens.

Anne Skinner Denson

Anne Skinner Denson, 93, longtime resident of Colonial Beach, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Anne was a former owner/manager of Denson’s Grocery in Colonial Beach with her husband, Bernard F. Denson. She was also a teacher’s aide at Colonial Beach Elementary and Woodland Academy. Anne was a well-known and loved caregiver to many in the Colonial Beach area and a member of Colonial Beach United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Denson Hollowell of King George; a son, Rocky Denson (Blaire) of Colonial Beach; four brothers, Wayne, Jimmy, John and Kenneth Skinner, all of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Nellie Pugh and Lois Purks, both of Fredericksburg; nine grandchildren, Janet Foster, Angela Haas, Karen Myers, Lisa Gandy, Amanda Preston, Bernard Denson, Lauren Wilson, Elizabeth Ann Denson and Katherine Denson; and 12 loving great-grandchildren.

Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard F. Denson, and a daughter, Jetta Denson Pugh.
A funeral was held Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Oak Grove, with the Rev. Randall Snipes and the Rev. Yunho Eo officiating. Interment followed in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Oak Grove. A reception followed in the church fellowship hall.

Fanny e. Baggett

Fanny E. Baggett, 88, of Fredericksburg passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Carriage Hill Health and Rehab Center.

Mrs. Baggett was a longtime resident of Colonial Beach. She was a telephone operator for C&P and AT&T for 30 years before retiring in 1986. Her hobbies were quilting and plastic canvas.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert E. Baggett, in June 2005; and her siblings, Robert in 1932, Homer in 1996, Katherine in 1999 and Evelyn in 2002.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane Kerr (Peter), of Fredericksburg; her husband’s brothers and their wives; and many nieces and nephews.

A service was held Friday, Feb. 8, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home.

Raymond Charles Pelon, II

Raymond Charles Pelon II, 59, of King George passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Pelon had worked as a computer specialist for industrial baking companies around the world. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Fairview Beach Yacht Club. He was a true outdoorsman who loved boating and fishing. He was a dog’s best friend.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 32 years, Jane; sister Theresa Yagel (Donald); brother-in-law Robert Wolfe (Dolores); sisters-in-law Patricia Sgro (James) and Christina Thomas; nephews Adam (Erika) and Joshua Yagel; nieces Renee Weiler (Kevin), Lisa Beatson (David) and Darlene Knight (Roland); great-niece Alexandra; great-nephews Conner, Ryan and Nathan; and many other nieces and nephews; and beloved friend Joy Farrow.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial will be private.

Roland L. Phillips

Roland L. Phillips, United States Navy Veteran, died on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in Spotsylvania, VA.
Roland worked for the Alexandria City Public School System for more than 30 years, before retiring in 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland H. and Rosalie Phillips; a son Shane M. Phillips; his step children, Carol Todd and Stephen Barton, a step grandchild James Bailey; his first wife Barbara J. Phillips; his second wife, Barbara C. Phillips, and a brother Glen Phillips.

Roland was the loving husband of Susan A. Phillips; a devoted father to his daughter, Shawna M. Carrion; step daughters, Leslie Bailey and Miriam Lipscomb, his son Raylee R. Phillips. He is also survived by his siblings, Ralph, George and Juanita; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314.

A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. Interment will be private.

Douglas B. Hubbard, Sr.

Douglas B. “Bernie” Hubbard Sr., 78, of Colonial Beach passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital after a long illness.

He was a local contractor for more than 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and also enjoyed his daily episode of “Law & Order: SVU.”

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, June D. Hubbard; his children, Douglas B. Hubbard Jr. (Ella) of King George, M. Susan Shipp (Jim) of Winchester, Mary Ann Chaffin (John) of Daytona Beach, FL, Cathy Rodriguez (Frank) of Berwyn Heights, MD., Scott Hubbard of Fredericksburg, Stacy Hubbard (Kim) of Jacksonville, FL; 10 grandchildren, Carrie Braxton, Sherri Di Toto, Tony Di Toto, Christopher Hubbard, Matthew Hubbard, Patricia Hubbard, Michael Hubbard, Kelly Cope, Matthew Rodriguez and Amber Hubbard; seven great-grandchildren: and four stepchildren, Sonny Grimley, Michael Grimley, Jay Grimley and Shelley Grimley Moreland.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Hubbard; mother Arnita Hubbard; brother Clifton “Bill” Hubbard; and his children, George Hubbard and Linda Hubbard (twins), and Bertha Hubbard; and stepson Jan Grimley.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Colonial Beach American Legion. A private burial service will be on Friday, Feb. 8, in Hampton, VA.
