Edward Patterson Woodworth

Edward Patterson Woodworth of Fredericksburg, VA died at home on December 24, 2012.

Pat was born in San Francisco, CA. on July 22, 1931, the son of Milton and Margaret Young Woodworth (both deceased). He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1953 and the Medical College of VA School of Dentistry in 1962.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane T. Woodworth, his children Margaret Jane Farrar (Tom), of Hillsborough, NC, Sara Leigh Worsham (Wayne), of West Point, VA, Bruce Edward Woodworth (Robin), of King George, David Thomas Woodworth, (Elizabeth), of Seabrook, SC; his five grandchildren Kate Michelle Farrar, of Winston-Salem, NC.; Cody Charles and Logan Edward Woodworth, of King George, and Samuel Thomas and Emma Elyse Woodworth, both of Seabrook, SC, and his brother Bruce Raleigh Woodworth, of Sparks, NV; several nieces and nephews.

Pat was a life member of the American Dental Assn. and the Medical College of Virginia Alumni Assn., the Fredericksburg Dental Society, the Richmond Dental Assn., and a Century Club Member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Assn.

Pat moved to King George in 1962, becoming the county’s first dentist. He chose King George because it offered him a place to open a personalized dental practice in a rural area with access to a major waterway where he could pursue his unabiding love of being on the water. He quickly became enamored with the county and was dedicated to its growth.

During his thirty five years of dental practice in King George County, he was a member of the King George Chamber of Commerce, the King George Planning Committee, and was instrumental in founding the King George State Bank, serving on its board for many years.

The arts, crafts, music and opera were always an important part of his life. He loved working with his hands. Whether it was designing, building or restoring boats, autos, buildings or furniture; they all had his name on them. His dentistry was a practical extension of his art. Designing and making fine furniture and restoring his Corvair were his most recent projects and will be a wonderful legacy to remember him by.

The Potomac River was Pat’s playground for many years. He spent as much of his free time as possible on the water; fishing, teaching his children to ski, taking trips to the bay. Part of his retirement was spent boating and fishing in the Florida Keys, continuing to share his love of the water with his family and friends whenever they could join him.
Pat will be greatly missed by his family and friends and their lives were richer having known him.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with a celebration of Pat’s life service beginning at 2 p.m. A reception will follow from 4 to 6 p.m. in Brock’s Riverside Grill, 503 Sophia St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401.

Contributions can be made to the: American Cancer Society, 420 Neff Ave., Ste 210, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, Richmond, VA, Attn. Pledge Coordinator, Gifts and Records Management, VCU, P.O. Box 842026, Richmond, VA, 23284).
