Va. Oyster Trail should become boon for region

The new Virginia Oyster Trail will help watermen in King George and Westmoreland, area residents said.
Several years ago, a group of business and civic leaders got together in Lancaster to talk about how to create economic activity in the Northern Neck by improving Virginia’s brand as an oyster producing state. The result was the creation of the Virginia Oyster Trail, which was announced last week by Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

Back-to-School sales tax holiday for supplies, clothing and shoes

It’s the end of July, and while there’s still a month before school starts, it’s already time to plan to save money during Virginia’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday. Aug. 1-3 is this year’s state sales tax holiday for numerous items, including school supplies.

Group proposes 10 recommendations to reduce carbon pollution and manage sea-level rise
 
Top policy proposal could raise an estimated $200 million annually for coastal adaptation by 2020 while cutting greenhouse gas emissions


NORFOLK - Experts detail the threat of rising tides and outline ten bold but credible recommendations to prepare for sea-level rise and reduce carbon pollution in a first-of-its-kind report aimed at safeguarding coastal Virginia. The recommendations include a call for Virginia to secure hundreds of millions of dollars in flood protection funds by participating in a regional carbon cap program for power plants. It also calls on the state to enact a mandatory clean electricity standard, encourage development of solar and wind power, improve storm evacuation and shelter efforts, and coordinate efforts to maintain national security in an area that includes the world's largest naval base.

RICHMOND – To celebrate the June 28 Great American Backyard Campout (GABC), you don’t need to travel much farther than your backyard to one of the 36 Virginia State Parks. All of Virginia’s state parks offer special programs for the annual event, designed to get more families outdoors and enjoying nature through camping. The National Wildlife Federation sponsors the event nationally.

KG Girl Scout Troop 9 Donates Books to Charity

King George Girl Scout Troop 9 donated books to the Children’s Hospital in our nation’s capital. The girls gathered books from family and friends to donate. The girls gave about 150 books.
