Rapp. Fall Baseball opening day results

The Rappahannock Fall Baseball League season kicked off on Saturday, Aug. 30. The King George varsity and junior varsity teams were both crowned RFBL Champions last year, and they are looking to defend their titles.  The King George varsity team hosted Northumberland on Saturday, and walked away with a split in the double-header.  Northumberland won the first game, 7-4, but King George rallied and won the second game 6-1.

King George took the lead in the 1st inning of game 1, as lead off batter Matthew Hunt made his way to second base on several defensive errors. King George’s next batter Tyler Truslow singled into center field, scoring Hunt, and getting himself to third base on a throwing error.  Zak Kegley followed with a ground out to the shortstop which allowed Truslow to score.

Northumberland scored a run in the top of the 3rd, but KG went up 3-1 in the bottom of the 3rd when Jimmy Carroll reached by error, Hunt singled, Truslow hit a sacrifice fly to deep center moving Carroll to 3rd, and Kegley hit a RBI single down the third base line.

King George lead most of the game, but Northumberland rallied in the top of the 5th, scoring 6 runs on 4 walks, 2 hit batters, and a couple of key hits, staking Northumberland to a 7-3 lead.  King George closed the gap to 7-4 in the last inning, when Carroll walked and reached 2nd base on a passed ball, followed by a line drive RBI single into center field by Truslow. A well hit ground ball by Damian Carroll was turned into an out, ending the game with several King George runners on base.

Dustin Phillips pitched 3 quality innings for King George (4 strikeouts, 2 walks, 3 hits allowed).  Damian Carroll and Dylan Dombrowskas pitched in relief for King George.

In the 2nd game, King George took an early lead in the 1st inning when Hunt singled and Dombrowskas hit a 2 run homerun over the left field fence.  In the 2nd inning, Gavin Lutz reached base and made his way to home plate on several mistakes, stretching the King George lead to 3-1. Northumberland scored their only run in the 3rd inning, and King George added 3 more runs in the 5th, on a single by Truslow, a walk to Kegley, a line drive double into center field by Dombrowskas which scored 2 runs, and a RBI single by David Hunt.

King George pitcher Lane Ward hurled 4 stellar innings (6, strikeouts, 2 walks, 2 hits allowed), and Dombrowskas closed out the game by pitching the final inning.  The King George defense played very well on the day.

The King George junior varsity team lost both games of their double header versus Riverbend by scores of 14-0 and 11-1, as the Riverbend pitchers threw very well. King George had 4 hits on the day, two by Austin Halter, and two by Bailey Pierce. Matthew Wright knocked in walked batter Owen Hynson for the only King George run on the day.

The King George RFBL teams will play their next games at King George Middle School on Saturday, Sept 10. The varsity team will host Liberty High School with the first game starting at 10 a.m., and the junior varsity team will host Mountain View with the first game scheduled for 2 p.m.
