Beach hosts Northern Neck Strongman competition

Mixing brawn with the courage to stand among the elite strong men of the Northern Neck became the theme for the first annual Northern Neck Strongman Competition. Sponsored by Colonial Beach High School (CBHS) and the Virginia National Guard, led by Sergeant Greene, 16 athletes, from grades 8-12, pushed their physical abilities to the limit. The event took place at Colonial Beach High School, on the grounds of Monroe Park.
After the weigh-in, athletes tested their speed, endurance and strength during the following events: tire flip, sand bag carry, farmer’s toss and Humvee push. The main event included a four-man tug-o-war team competition. Strongman competitors were divided up into three weight classes: lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight.

Before the competition, athletes were required to sign a waiver of liability, and pay a $7 fee.
With the exception of King George High School strongman Denver Harris winning tire flip for the Heavyweight Division, the following athletes from Colonial Beach swept the rest of the competition: Paul Roberson: tire flip, Middleweight Division; Josh Sanford: sand bag carry, Middleweight Division; Paul Roberson: Humvee push, Middleweight Division; Jacob Hoffmaster: Humvee push, Heavyweight Division. First place athletes competed in the multiple events, capturing second and third place finishes.
Final results for other featured athletes: Josh Sanford (second), Jason Vickery (third), tire flip, Middleweight Division; Jamie Little (second), Deandre Hundley (third), tire flip Heavyweight Division; Timmy Jackson (second), Jason Vickery (third), sand bag carry, Middleweight Division; Rodney Jamison (second), Mikey Phillips (third), sand bag carry, Heavyweight Division; Chuck Samuels (second), Jason Vickery (third), Humvee push, Middleweight Division; Denver Harris (second), Mikey Phillips (third), Humvee push, Heavyweight Division.
The individual tug-o-war single elimination winner was Jacob Hoffmaster. The CBHS team of Jacob Hoffmaster, Jamie Little, Josh Sanford and Mikey Phillips defeated the Essex team of Thomas Taylor, Deandre Hundley, Rodney Jamison and Chuck Samuels.
