7th annual Drifter Cheer Camp

The 7th Annual Drifter Youth Cheer Camp was held August 13-17 at Colonial Beach High School in the Drifter Dome.  The camp was held for students in kindergarten through seventh grade.

There were 28 children in attendance at this year’s camp.  The camp focused on instructing young cheerleaders on the proper techniques in motions, jumps, cheers, dances, and tumbling.  Also, for the first time, all camp participants were instructed and participated in basic stunting techniques.

The week culminated in a pep rally for family and friends of all the camp participants.  Every camper also received a certificate and t-shirt for their participation.  The camp was taught by the CBHS cheerleaders and was coordinated by Jennifer Grigsby.

“I would like to give special thanks to Domino’s Pizza and Ledo’s Pizza for providing pizza for all of the campers and instructors on Monday and Friday,” Drifter camp coordinator Jennifer Grigsby said. “Thank you for your continued support of this program and the future of Drifter athletics.

I would also like to thank the Sons of the American Legion – Post 148 for their sponsorship of the camp t-shirts.  The support of community members like you is what makes programs like this possible.”

Special award winners per grade level included: Most Spirited:  Carlaye Smith, Kindergarten - 2nd grade; Madison Scherer, 3rd – 5th grade; Madison Foster, 6th – 7th grade; Best Jumps: Harmony Williams, Kindergarten - 2nd grade; Kennedy Muse, 3rd – 5th grade; Rebecca Velazquez, 6th – 7th grade; Best Motions: Abigail Parks, Kindergarten – 2nd grade; Cheyenne Jones, 3rd – 5th grade; Reilly Muse, 6th – 7th grade; Best Dancer: Anna Davidson, Kindergarten – 2nd grade; Grace Muse, 3rd – 5th grade; Hannah Butler, 6th – 7th grade; Best Tumbler: Ryleigh Barber, Kindergarten – 2nd grade; Hannah Kelly (base), Shawney Muse (flyer); Christiana Parker, 6th – 7th grade; Most Valuable Cheerleader (MVP): Harmony Williams, kindergarten – 2nd grade; Grace Muse, 3rd – 5th grade; Jordyn Pratt, 6th – 7th grade.

“I was tremendously impressed with the level of talent and commitment from the camp participants this year,” Grigsby said.  “The girls worked extremely hard at perfecting the material they were taught over the week-long camp.  The future of Colonial Beach Cheerleading looks bright for many years to come.”
