Drifters complete another amazing year

The pride of the “Black & Gold” is here to stay. From the start of the 2010-2011 sports season, the Drifters have competed with the best, while leaving no doubt that they are well equipped to compete in the Northern Neck District.

Rather than rebuild, Jeremy Jack and his staff of coaches reloaded the varsity football program with a group of prototype athletes willing to play iron-man football for four straight quarters. After a tough first year in the district that yielded four wins, the Drifters bounced back with a first round Region playoff berth that featured a 3-2, 6-5 record.

Proving that the sophomore season is a charm, the competition cheerleading team, led by longtime Drifter cheerleading coach Jennifer Grigsby, won its second straight Northern Neck District Cheerleading

Championship in a row.

The varsity girls basketball team left fans breathless and yearning for more. The Drifters 2010-2011 season may have fallen short of a District and Regional Championship, but it will always be remembered for posting 17 victories. The final record of 8-2, 17-6 reflects the impact the team has had on the Northern Neck.

The future of Drifter girls basketball is bright as the Drifters junior varsity team dominated the Northern Neck regular season with the best record in the conference, 9-0, 16-5.  In addition, the Middle School girls basketball team defeated Northumberland 44-37 to win its second Northern Neck District Championship in a row.

As for the spring season, the Drifters are rebuilding all facets of their programs by reintroducing the junior varsity baseball and softball programs. As the old saying goes, hope springs eternal. The Drifters middle school baseball team may not have succeeded in defending its crown in this year’s championship against Montross, but the players show promise as the future of Drifters high school baseball.
Steve Swope’s return to the varsity baseball program has sparked hope to the Drifters baseball program. After finishing 8-10 for the season, coach Swope now has a foundation to build on.
