CB Drifters use pitching and defense to dominate

The Drifters varsity baseball team mode of operation this season is dominant pitching and defense. Last week the Drifters shut out two opponents, running their record to 6-0 thus far this season. Along with two shutout performances from their pitching staff, the Drifters also featured two error free games, as they earned wins over King & Queen and Northampton last week. “Our theme so far has been pitching and defense, but really it’s been too cold all year for bats to warm up,” Drifters varsity baseball head coach Steve Swope said.

CB 14 – K&Q 0
It took five innings for the Drifter pitching staff led by Carlos Bermudez, David Allison and Josh Thomas to shutout the King & Queen Tigers. The Black & Gold dismantled the Tigers with 14 runs, produced by nine hits, including six doubles.

Bermudez was solid on the mound for three innings, as he yielded zero runs on two hits, struck out three, as he picked up his first mound win of the season. At the plate, he helped his cause with a two-run double during the third inning.

Seniors Allison and Thomas closed out the last two frames with scoreless performances. Offensively, Allison produced an RBI, and two runs scored. Thomas struck out all three hitters during his mound outing, and scored a run to aid his team.

Senior second baseman, Sidney Horton reached base three times, knocked in two runs with a two-run single, and scored three runs. Gavin Lutz singled and scored, while teammate Ryan Thomas doubled and scored.

Senior centerfielder Dion Gonzalez added a bases-clearing double, totaling three RBIs. Kamron Smith slammed a double and a single, which drove in a run, and later scored two more. Nick Graves also doubled home a run, and scored two runs. Carter Foster rounded out the attack with an RBI double.

CB 10 – Northampton 0
At the unfriendly confines of West Point, the Drifters faced Eastern Shore foe, Northampton for the meeting between the two schools. In the first inning, the Drifters produced three runs. Later in the third inning, the Drifters scored two runs, and five more in the fifth inning, before the 10-0 slaughter rule took effect.

Sophomore pitcher Nick Graves hurled a five-inning shutout, allowing only two hits, while striking out six and walking one batter. Graves picked up his third mound win of the season with another solid performance. At the plate, he produced one of the Drifters’ four hits. His plate offering included a single, walk, and two scored runs.

Senior catcher Josh Thomas continued his clutch hitting streak, as he laced a two-run single in the third inning, and drove in a run in the fifth, and later scored a run.

Sophomore outfielder Carter Foster ripped a single, and scored his team’s 10th and final run. Sidney Horton knocked in a run with a gap-shot double.  Dion Gonzalez walked twice, and scored two runs, while teammates Kamron Smith, Gavin Lutz, and Devin Davis each reached base, and scored a run apiece.

The Drifters are undefeated as they head into spring break vacation. They will travel to play Liberty Bealton on Wednesday, April 3 at 5 p.m.
