Kids have a blast at annual Drifter baseball camp

The 16th Annual Drifter Baseball Camp was a huge success at Monroe Park last week, with 88 campers enjoying the grand ole game.  It was a smash hit as the youngsters’ enthusiasm rang out each day with a full week of fun on the fields.
Up and coming Drifter ball players were treated to a week of fun, games, trophies, camp T-shirts, evaluation cards, daily contests and solid fundamentals of America’s pastime.  Five different fields were used at spacious Monroe Park to keep four T-ball/Minor League teams and six Little League/Senior League teams rolling each day.   Campers rotated through 12 stations daily during the week.  Drifter Varsity and JV baseball and softball players helped coach – relaying valuable tips to campers on hitting, pitching, base running and defensive and offensive skills.

Varsity baseball head coach and camp director, Steve Swope, was ably assisted by coaches Jonathan Parker, Earl Payton and Bill Wilson, as well as long time Little League coach Jimmy Moran.  Past Drifter varsity baseball and softball players rounded out the staff.
“Our staff did a fantastic job all week, coaching, mingling and having fun with this great bunch of campers,” Swope said. “Current and past players continue to give back to the program by sharing their talent, time and love of the game.”
Coach Swope also thanks High Tides on the Potomac, BB&T, Union First Market Bank, McDonalds, J5 Real Estate Investment, Creative Woodwork, Imagine One, Ltd., J’s Cars, F&A Auto Sales, The Happy Clam Restaurant, Colonial Yacht Center and Riverboat on the Potomac for sponsoring camp and T-shirts.  Also, special thanks go to Wilkerson’s Restaurant for sponsoring trophies and the baseball program.  Additional thanks go to Susie Foster, Judy Long, Barbara Moxley, Lee Colley, Ronnie Peyton and Virginia Wardman and staff for snack bar accommodations, clerical and registration support and field preparations.
