A strong and healthy fitness Drifter generation

He taught them well! For over 34 years Steve Swope has extolled the benefits of staying fit to elementary, middle school and high school kids. “Along with healthy eating habits, physical fitness should be heavily emphasized,” Swope said. “It keeps people alive

longer, and provides a better quality of life.”

From the moment they are able to do sit-ups to the day they capture the national spotlight, such as former middle school Drifter and Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith or Longwood University point guard TT Carey Swope promotes health and fitness. Whether an aspiring fitness enthusiast becomes a high school sports star or a youth who seeks a better quality of life, Swope is adamant about eating the proper diet, while pursuing a daily regimen of exercise.

“We try to keep all our kids physically active, especially when the State test come around,” Swope said. “Kids should take pride in doing their best to pass them all.”

Last week Swope gave his final State physical fitness test, and bid farewell to his middle school health and physical education classes. Although his presence will be missed on the courts of elementary school, middle school and high school, his legacy for encouraging pride and self-esteem through exercise will forever become a part of Drifter lore. His message lives on in the hearts of the community of Colonial Beach.
