Lady Drifters’ supporting cast pummel Middlesex Chargers

On Monday night, the rafters of the Drifterdome rattled and the walls shook with an unadulterated adrenalin athletic rush. The Lady Drifters varsity basketball team proved their unwavering will to step outside their usual scoring box with a 69-47 win over Middlesex. The Drifters overcame foul trouble to three key starters, and a relentless Charger offense to hold off their Tidewater rivals.

The last time the Drifters and Chargers battled, the ladies of black & gold, defeated their Tidewater rivals, 50-23.

From start to finish the game was  a track meet, and a physical test of conditions, as the both teams combined for 52 fouls.

In the first quarter, the Drifters left the Chargers at the starting gate, as they jumped to a 16-6 lead. McKenzie Conway led the charge with four points. Although the quarter ended with two Drifters starters in foul trouble, their supporting cast stepped up their game by smothering the Charger offense with deflections, steals, and fast break scoring opportunities. The Drifter intangible seemed to throw the Chargers off balance.

In the second quarter, on four occasions, the Chargers failed to convert at the foul line, but somehow managed to score four points from the field. However, the Drifters smothering defense allowed them to sustain a eight point lead (22-14) into halftime.

In the third quarter, Deniya Newman and Emily Parks rattled the Chargers offense with steals, and forced miscues. Newman and Parks combined for 11 points in the quarter. As the Charger offense struggled to survive the Drifter onslaught, they trailed 53-26 at the end of the quarter

In the final quarter, the Chargers hopes of a miraculous rally dwindled as Billie Gould and Meghan Seaman took over the post area. Gould scored six points courtesy of fast break opportunities, while Conway crashed the boards to score four points to give the Drifters their first win of the season.

The following Drifters recorded double digit scores: Caneisha Fulcher, 14 points; Deniya Newman, 13 points; McKenzie Conway, 12 points; Billie Gould, 12 points. As for the Chargers, Brittiny Payne led her team with 20 points.
