Foxes volleyball preview

The direction for Fox volleyball is about to change. King George High School head volleyball coach Jill Wine is well aware of the need for a volleyball feeder system.

Although the Foxes demonstrated signs of growth last season, the end result was a 6-12 season. While they produced three of the area’s most dominant players in the form of Jasmine Daniels, Katelyn O’Campo, and Lea Howard, the Foxes must sustain a core source of talent from within the county, if they have a hope of every breaking into the top of the volleyball food chain.

“We always want to come into the season improving, and I believe we’ve improved,” Wine said. “We received a compliment from one the Spotsylvania athletic directors; he said, “King George volleyball actually looks like real volleyball.”

Unsatisfied with their past laurels and recent history, Wine is adamant about breaking their competition’s stranglehold on the district title. “We want to do more than just look like a volleyball team; our aim is to be a force out on the court against the top teams,” Wine said.

During winter off-season activities, seven Foxes competed in Virginia Flyers winter volleyball program.

With the experience of the Foxes five returning seniors from last year’s team, their fortunes have the potential to change drastically. “We’re going to take the strength that they offer us, and focus on that,” Wine said.

The returning seniors include: Carley Armentrout (#3), Lea Howard (#7), Madi Parker (#2), Amber Smith (#1), Jessica Swenson (#17).

The Foxes have a strong depth foundation made up of underclassmen, who are hungry to establish a legacy of winning. The following underclassmen are invaluable assets to the Foxes destiny this season: Nicole Josemanns (#12), Mekaylah Thompson (#8), Alli Trainum, Sarah Woodruff (#19), Lauren Howard (#4), Jenna Wine (#5), Monica Brandts (#18).

Lea Howard’s setting skills will determine the Foxes ability to consistently score. Also, in light of the Foxes passing abilities, they will feature a libero player.

Versatility will be crucial to the Foxes ability to gel as a team. For the first time in years, King George will field of team of athletes capable of playing a variety of positions. “We have girls that can play more than just one position, whereas they can play around the court,” Wine said.

The assistant volleyball coach for the varsity this season will be Maria Clark.

The Foxes junior varsity team will continue to fill the role of their primary feeder system. Wine’s husband, Drew has taken over the role of head coach. Along with his experience as a volleyball volunteer, he has a history of officiating at high school volleyball games.

The following players will represent the Foxes junior varsity volleyball team this season: Madi Koban (#2), Sally Owen (#4), Logan Howard (#1), Arianne Green (#15), Andi Wine (#9), Abigail Davis (#3), Micala Peterson (#18), Braedyn Hazelaar (#14),  MacKenzie Miniuk (#7), Kayleigh Stevenson (#5), Amber Breeden (#5), Shativa Harvey (#17), Sydney Mrotek (#13).

The Foxes will open their regular season on at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, against Washington & Lee.
