KG JV Foxes crush Culpeper Blue Devils

The Fox junior varsity baseball  machine continues to roll along in its 4-1 season, as it crushed visiting Culpeper (2-4) in five innings 17-6. Jordi Estes had a banner day at the plate with a base clearing three-run homerun, a double and a single that resulted in three RBIs and a run scored.

The Foxes feasted off Blue Devil pitching with 12 hits, including RBIs from eight different hitters.
Thus far this season, the Foxes’ offense has amassed 57 runs in five games.

Corey Henderson picked up the pitching victory for the Foxes. In four innings of mound work, Henderson

gave up nine hits and walks, while striking out three batters.

In the bottom of the first inning, Zak Kegley singled home Jordi Estes for the Foxes’ first run, leaving two runners aboard. But Blue Devil pitcher Bret Smith pitched his way out of the inning by striking out the next two hitters. Foxes relief pitcher Blake Clift would earn the save with one inning of pitching.

In the top of the second inning, the Blue Devils tied the game at 1-1, as they manufactured a run with Dalton Baldo reaching base on an error, advancing to third base on a balk, and eventually scoring on a Tyler Wilson single.

Later in the bottom of the second inning, Hunter Tolliver put the Foxes back on top with a sacrifice fly RBI that scored Cody Bell.

The Foxes’ success was short-lived, as the Blue Devils rallied to tie and take the lead in the following inning. After Ben Yator scored Matt Hall on a sacrifice fly, Joe Riddle lined a single up the middle that scored Cory Slawson.

With one out in the bottom of the third inning, the Foxes regained the lead on a RBI grounder by Henderson and a pass-ball by Smith. Later in the inning the Foxes picked two more runs, forcing Culpeper to change pitchers.

Undaunted, with a Fox lead of 6-3, under windy conditions with temperatures dipping into the 40s, the Blue Devils fought back in the top of the fourth inning.

At this point in the game, the Blue Devils had given up four unearned runs, but their offense was far from calling it a day. After a sacrifice fly RBI by Daniel Fredrickson, Chaz Jolliaf stepped up in a pinch hitting role to score two runners on a single, tying the game at 6-6.

The Foxes offense was relentless as it picked up an additional nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Hundley started the scoring with a single that scored two runners. Two batters later, Lane Ward singled in Kegley to give King George a 9-6 lead. With one out, Blake Cliff lined a single into left field that scored the lead Fox runner. After a dropped third strike, Ward rounded the bases to give the Foxes a 11-6 lead.

In a strange set of circumstances, Culpeper’s catcher searched in vain for the location of a pass-ball, Tolliver would reach on an error, as Bell scored the Foxes 12th run. For all intents and purposes, Estes sealed the win with a three-run homer, which gave the Foxes a 15-6 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, with two outs, Fredrickson singled in the final two runs to end the game on a 10-run rule, 17-6.

The Foxes will travel to play Chancellor next Thursday at 5 p.m. On the following day, the Foxes will continue their road schedule with a game against James Monroe. Game time is 5 p.m.

Results of the home game featuring Courtland on Tuesday were not available due to press deadlines.
