Chargers find redemption with 2-1 win over King George

On March 22nd, the King George High School Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team made school history by defeating the Chancellor Chargers, 1-0. The game was won on a score from Carley Armentrout, on an assist from Anna Kniceley.  However, both teams returned to battle last Tuesday, with the Chargers claiming a narrow hard-fought 2-1 victory on the Foxes’ home field. Now that both teams have tasted the spoils of victory, and

the disappointment associated with defeat, will history repeat itself, and place both teams against each other in the upcoming Battlefield District Championship? Only time will tell.

“It hurt that we didn’t have all of our starters, but we should have played better as a team,” Lindsey Armentrout said. “Now we know what we need to work on at practice, so we can do better against Eastern View.”

Interestingly enough, the Foxes did do better. In fact, Lindsey kept her promise, by leading the Foxes (7-3, 6-3) with two goals, as King George edged the Cyclones 3-2.   C.J. Jones added a goal and an assist, while teammate Caeli Cusworth also added an assist. Maddie Walther recorded both scores for the Cyclones.

Chancellor vs. King George
At 31:48 Chancellor Freshman Midfielder/Forward Nira Moeller overcame several Fox defenders to score the game’s first goal. The first half ended with both team attempting nearly the same amount of shot-on-goals.

“Even though we had the lead at the half, I thought we got outplayed,” Chancellor Head Coach Jay Meyer said. “We looked a little slow, playing 50-50 ball, so I challenged them at halftime to pick it up. As a result, we played a lot better in the second half.”

In the second half, the defensive duel continued, as both goal- keepers were tasked to fight off rival shots. However, at 27:41, Freshman Midfield/Back Mattie Amos scored the Chargers’ second goal, digging a deeper void for the Foxes to overcome, with a 2-0 lead.

In the face of a ticking time clock, Heather Hanks rallied the Foxes back within one point, with a shot into the side of the Chargers’ goal. The Foxes’ sense of urgency fueled a litany of action around the field, as both teams struggled to maintain possession. Lindsey’s failed attempt fueled a chaotic scramble for position, and possession in front of the Chargers that ultimately resulted in a Chargers’ save.

“King George is a great team; they played us tough—we’re happy with the win,” Meyer said.

Chancellor defeated Culpeper to push their record to 6-3-1, 5-2-1.  If the Foxes reach postseason district play, it will be the first time in King George School history.

Foxes Boys’ Soccer Cyclone results

Foxes’ standout boys’ soccer players, Javan Haas and Matt Walseman, combined for goals to help King George (4-3-1) defeat Eastern View, 4-1. Jacob Perkins also scored two goals, while Foxes’ Goalkeeper Johannes Gulick recorded 13 saves.
