Undefeated and the best in the Battlefield

How difficult is it to complete a regular season undefeated? It’s extremely difficult!  A team must be solid across the board — strong pitching, potent offense and a defense that makes the plays that seal the wins.  The King George JV Lady Foxes met those objectives and ended the season 15-0 (13-0 District).
The Foxes traveled to Caroline for their final game of the season.  The Cavaliers are one of the three powers in JV Softball in the Battlefield District, along with King George and Spotsylvania.  The Foxes expected a tough game, and it was!
King George entered the game with two of their starters unavailable to play.  The game was being played on the Cavaliers’ home field.  The Foxes had everything to gain and Caroline had nothing to lose, but something to gain with chance to end King George’s undefeated streak.
King George scored in the first inning, using a walk, an error and two hits to break the ice with two runs.  Caroline was unable to respond as the Foxes defense grabbed three fly balls to complete a three-up, three-down inning. Foxes 2-0.
The second inning was interesting with both teams threatening, but neither team able to score.
The third inning was a challenge for the Cavaliers as King George loaded the bases with two outs.  After a long at bat, Caroline recorded the final out with a good play on a ground ball.  The Cavs showed no offense as they went quietly, three-up, three-down.
The fourth inning was different with King George being held scoreless as their inning ended on a double play.  Caroline carried this solid play into their half of the inning, wrapping two hits around an error to score a run and close the gap to 2-1.
The fifth and sixth innings had no runs crossing the plate with the Foxes going three-up, three-down in both innings.  In the fifth, the King George coaches made a defensive change in the outfield that came into play.  Caroline had two runners on base when they slashed a fly ball to right field where Kiersten Sydnor made a fine play for the second out.  One ground ball later the Foxes ended the fifth.

The sixth inning was a quick up and down for both teams.
The seventh inning was pure drama as both teams demonstrated their character and abilities.  The Lady Foxes came out roaring, following a walk by smacking two hits to drive in a run.  Two batters later, King George had a third hit adding a fourth run to their total. Foxes 4-1.
Caroline did not fold.  The Cavaliers quickly scored two runs using a walk, an error, a FC and a hit to close the score to 4-3.  Another hit put the tying and winning runs in scoring position.  The next batter hit a high popup for the second out but Caroline then drew a walk to load the bases.
The final Cavalier batter hit a weak grounder that the Foxes turned into the final out.  The King George Lady Softball Foxes had earned their undefeated regular season.
Leading the King George hitting offense was Jessie Middleton with two hits and Alli Trainum, Monica Brandts, Kari McCullough, Kiersten Sydnor and Ashley MacGregor with one each.  The scoring was lead by Monica Brandts and Jessie Middleton with each recording an RBI for the Foxes.
The King George defense was a critical factor in this win. The players recorded 18 outs over the course of the game including the final eight outs of this very tough win.  With 11 ground outs and seven in the air, the Foxes defense met the challenge — and won.
The JV Lady Softball Foxes travel to Spotsylvania for the Battlefield District Championship game next week.  It appears that the Knights will be their opponent.
