Despite chilly weather, W&L soccer begins spring season

It may actually be winter for a few more weeks, but spring sports are getting underway at Washington and Lee High School in Montross and the student athletes playing soccer, baseball, softball, and track and field are eager to get started.

Head Coach Gary Daiger and his W&L girls’ soccer team kicked off the spring season with a scrimmage at Caroline High School in Bowling Green on March 1. The Eagles’ girls won 4 to 2. Lizett Barajas was top scorer with two goals, assisted by Lidia Cardenas and Megan Daiger. The Eagles’ girls open their regular season at home March 13 against King William at 5:30 p.m.
“I was very proud of the way our team kept fighting, after Caroline scored their second goal the momentum shifted to them but our girls never gave up and believed that they could win and they did,” Coach Daiger said. The girls’ soccer team returns five starters from a 2012 team that finished second in the district tournament.
Coach R.J. Sudduth’s boys’ soccer team went 15-1 in 2012 and finished second in the Northern Neck District. Top returning players include Juan Ochoa, a senior forward who was Northern Neck District Player of the Year with 35 goals and seven assists. Ochoa was all region and all state last year.
Also back for Coach Sudduth this season are Jose Chipres, a senior who was an all-district mid-fielder; Luis Chipres, a sophomore forward who was all-district, senior fullback Hudson Hutt; and senior fullback Lashoad Hopewell, a senior who was all district. The Eagles’ boys open their regular season Friday at home against James Monroe at 5:30 p.m.
Varsity baseball under the direction of Coach Michael Clark is scheduled to open its home season at W&L against King George on March 12 at 5 p.m. The JV baseball team coached by Drew Hutt is scheduled to play its next home game against King George on March 19. That game also begins at 5 p.m.
Coach Lacey Morris girls’ varsity softball team will open the W&L home season on March 12 against King George at 5 p.m. The JV girls’ softball team coached by Maria Hutt will open their home season on March 19 against King George at 5 p.m.
The W&L track and field team will go on the road to open the season with a meet at New Kent on March 13 and a meet at Charles City on March 20. W&L head coaches for track and field are Cole Vanover coaching boys and Cindy Flickinger coaching girls. They will be assisted by coaches Dean Taylor and James Jefferies.
