W&L cross-country set to host Pope’s Creek 5K

The Washington & Lee High School cross country team will host a 5K race at George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument on Sunday, April 21.  Coach Cole Vanover said a one mile kid’s race will also be held as a part of the event.

“About two years ago, I approached the juniors on my cross country team and told them they were required to do some type of community event,” Vanover said.
“They asked about doing a race in the spring for the community, and then literally ran with it,” Vanover said.  “They have handled the meetings with the administration at George Washington’s birthplace, T-shirt designs, and registration and so on.”

Vanover said the race will promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle and raise money and awareness for the W&L cross country team.  Awards will be given for the top 10 males and the top 10 female runners in the 5K.  All of the participants in the one-mile run will receive an award.

Vanover said the seniors on this year’s cross country team have committed themselves to the 5K event. “Taylor Lewis has really been the leader of it,” he said. “She has been excellent leading the group and she and all the seniors will be missed next year.”

“We do charge for the Pope’s Creek race, but it covers our costs for the race materials,” Vanover said.  “This is our second year doing this race, and hopefully, it will become an annual thing. Our goal is to give to the community and get younger kids involved.”

The W&L cross country team now sponsors two races.  Including the Pope’s Creek 5K, they also host the Chandler three-mile race which is held the first Saturday in October in connection with the Fall Festival in Montross.

The pre-registration fee for the Pope’s Creek 5K is $10.  Registration on race day will be $15.  Registration for the one mile is $5. Registration forms are available at wlathletics.wmlcps.org.  Registration forms can be mailed to Cole Vanover, Washington and Lee High School, 16380 Kings Highway, Montross, VA 22520
