CB Drifter varsity volleyball forges into Fall sports season

The Drifters will have a new volleyball coach setting a course for their future in the Northern Neck this season. Colonial Beach High School Athletic Director, Chase Davidson has replaced John Kramer, who coached the Drifters for one season. Daphne Davidson will assist Davidson.

Experience will have its benefits as the following players return to lead the Drifters into a competitive field of non-district and district opponents: Kora Herrod, junior, opposite hitter; Jessica Hurt, junior, middle hitter; Rachael Allison, sophomore, opposite hitter; McKenzie Conway, sophomore, opposite hitter, outside hitter; Tniyzsa Taylor, junior, middle hitter, setter.

Former Drifter junior varsity players who have been promoted to the varsity team include: Billie Gould, junior, outside hitter; Jessica Robey, junior, middle hitter; Brooke Payne, sophomore, setter; Morgan Whicker, sophomore, middle hitter.

The Drifter volleyball program also includes three new players: Chandale Dillon (senior, opposite hitter); Meghan Seamen (freshman, outside hitter); and Courtney Buzby (8th grade, outside hitter, opposite hitter).

After a recent volleyball camp and a week of practice, the Drifters are prepared for the upcoming season. “The preseason practices have gone well thus far,” Davidson said.  “We had solid attendance during the summer open gyms and I’m very pleased with what we’ve been able to do so far.”

Communication and familiarity with individual skill sets are a top priority as the Drifters focus on strengthening their fundamental volleyball skills. “We’ve focused a lot of time on passing and digging drills,” Davidson said. “We have a new setter this year so we’ve also focused quite a bit of time on setter and hitter drills.”

In regard to the tough schedule ahead of them, Davidson is confident that his team has the personnel to compete in the Northern Neck District. “I feel like we have the right girls that can go out there and compete all season,” Davidson said.  “The female programs are on the rise at the Beach - so I’m excited to see what we will be able to accomplish this year.”

In an effort to promote a strong sense of team unity, while instilling a strong sense of focus into the program, Davidson will take his team to the University of Virginia to see the Lady Cavaliers volleyball team play later this month.

“I would like to see a larger group of young girls come for the team, and go with us to see the game played at the DI level,” Davidson said.

Peering into the schedule, the Drifters will have their home open during a scrimmage against Rappahannock County on Thursday, Aug. 16 in the Drifterdome. On Monday, Aug. 27, the Drifters will travel to play West Point. On the following day, the Drifters will continue on the road to battle cross-town Battlefield District rival King George.

The Drifters will travel to the unfriendly confines of Washington & Lee for their final game of the season on Oct. 25. The Northern Neck District tournament will begin on Oct. 30 and end on Nov. 1.
