CB Drifters battle Indians down to wire

Now that the Drifters’ (2-4, 3-5) playoff hopes are no longer a certainty, their fate hinges on the outcome of Saturday’s away game against Lancaster.

The 22-20-loss against Northumberland (5-3, 5-3) on “Senior Night” changed the entire sweet 16-playoff scenario. Instead of the Drifters playing for home-field advantage, they are literally playing for their post-season life as they take the field at 2 p.m., on Saturday, against the host Red Devils.

Last season, Lancaster defeated the Colonial Beach 29-28. With a stacked deck and uphill climb facing them, the Drifters are set for another barnburner type of gridiron brawl against a foe that

does not know the meaning of quit.

As for Friday night’s battle at Monroe Park, both teams gave the fans their money’s worth with four quarters of solid defense.

The first quarter was a scoreless deadlock. However, within two minutes and 46 seconds of the second quarter, the “Black & Gold” struck paydirt, as Josh Thomas pounded a touchdown in from three yards out. After a successful point after, the Drifters led 7-0.

To the dismay of the partisan Drifter crowd, the Indians responded on the ensuing series of downs with a 74-yard scoring drive. The four-yard Chris Waller touchdown was set up by a 35-yard completion to Kyle Elmore. After a successful two-point conversion, the Indians led 7-8.
The first half ended with Tim McDowney foiling a potential Indian scoring drive with an interception.

In the latter part of the third quarter, Northumberland capitalized on a Drifter turnover with a 54-yard touchdown to Kyle Elmore. After their second two-point conversion, the Indians led 7-16 with 9:16 left to play in the third quarter.

Later in the quarter, the specter of the standout Drifter cornerback known as “Tim Tim” McDowney would soon strike again with an interception that resulted in a 90-yard touchdown. The Drifter score cut the Indian deficit to three points (13-16).

With the momentum favoring them, the Drifters started the fourth quarter with a 61-yard scoring drive that resulted in a 13-yard touchdown pass to Josh Sanford. After the point after, the Drifters led the Indian by points (20-16).

As fate would have it, with 2:38 remaining in the game, on a third and down and six yards to go for a first down, Waller completed a 54-yard touchdown to Jalen Conway. The Indians would go on to complete their third two-point conversion of the game to take a 20-22 lead.

With 2:31 remaining on the clock, the Drifters mounted a 53-yard drive that ended on the Indian eight-yard line. With five seconds to play, Josh Sanford’s 25-yard field goal swerved to the right, giving the Indians a hard-earned victory.
