Drifters varsity football 2011 season preview

The Drifter varsity football season is here! New Drifter head varsity football coach Scott Foster is determined to continue the proud tradition of Drifter pride with the same old-fashioned iron-man style of football that Colonial Beach High School is known for.

After seven years coaching under Jeremy Jack, former Drifter head coach and current Caroline

athletic director, Foster is a firm believer that if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

“Nothing will change — along with my personal touch, we will continue to implement the same game philosophy from coach Jack,” Foster said. Fans will witness the athletic finesse of Dion Gonzalez at running back, the catching consistency of Josh Sanford, the improvisational running skills of Tim McDowney, and the passing abilities of Kiante Dickerson at quarterback.
The unique brand of offense known as the single-wing set will be the primary Drifter offensive format.

Monroe Park will be buzzing on Sept. 9 when the Drifters host their first regular season game of the 2011 season against Charles City. The big question looming over the Drifter program this season — one that many fans are asking — is whether the Drifters will equal or surpass their 2010 performance.

Prior to the regular season, the Drifters will participate in a scrimmage Middlesex High School on Friday against Arcadia, Northumberland and Middlesex high schools. On Aug. 26, the Drifters will host Central Lunenburg in a scrimmage benefit game.

Last season, the Drifters varsity football team proved it is a legitimate threat in the Northern Neck District. After a tough first year in the district that yielded four wins, the Drifters bounced back with a first round Region playoff berth, that featured a 3-2, 6-5 record.

Using ball control and big play performances from key members of the team, the Drifters won six games in a row to qualify for a first round Region game against Franklin.

Jackson finished his senior season with 1,007 rushing yards on 155 carries. The unsung heroes who fought in the trenches so that the yard markers would advance to crucial first down yardages were the Drifter offensive line. Led by Jacob Hoffmaster, the Drifter offensive line proved its mettle all season long.

Now that seven key members of the team have graduated, the Drifters must collectively step up as a team to compete in the upcoming fall sports season.

“We have 21 true varsity football players on the team this year,” Foster said. “We will bring eight players up from the junior varsity for each game this season.”

As always, the Northern Neck District will be at war with some of the toughest teams in the state. Starting Aug. 26, regardless of what took place last season, from Lancaster to Essex, it’s going to be a roller coaster ride filled with bumps and turns for every team along the way. Stay tuned.
