Colonial Beach Drifters fall to Essex Trojans, 6-1

On Friday, at the hostile confines of Essex High School, in Tappahannock, the Drifters varsity baseball team lost to the Trojans, 6-1. Although the Drifters played a solid game defensively, they came up short on the offensive end.

The Drifters fell short during three scoring opportunities to cut into the Trojan lead, in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but only managed to plate one run. Trojan relief pitcher, Ricky Baughman pitched out of first and third, bases loaded situations. He also survived Drifter threats in the second inning to preserve the victory.

Patient and optimistic, Drifter head coach Steve Swope said, “We are playing better as a team. The kids know what it takes to win in this district,

and we are getting closer. We hope the back half of the schedule will bring the success we are striving for.”

Trojans 6 – Drifters 1
Drifter frustrations are the key words to describe road game against the Trojans. The Drifters stranded 10 base runners during the game. The game may arguably have ended differently if the Drifters had provided a clutch RBI base-hit.

Drifter pitching ace Alex Gorfida pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs — three of which were earned. The right-hander struck out struck out two batters during the course of the game.

Offensively, Dion Gonzalez has developed a knack for getting on base this season. He ripped a double into right field, walked and scored the lone run.

Josh Thomas and Travis Irvine added singles, but eventually were left stranded. On defense, Jason Vickery had several highlight film-type plays, including a great running catch near the outfield wall. He also threw out a Trojan runner as he attempted to advance to third base.
The Drifters are 0-5 in the Northern Neck District and 7-5 overall. The Drifters will be busy this week with three games. Results from the Tuesday, May 3, game against Washington and Lee were not available due to press deadlines.

The Drifters play James Monroe at home on Thursday, May 5, and on Friday, May 6, they travel to Lancaster.
