CBHS Drifters at 6-0 enter district play

The Colonial Beach Drifters varsity baseball team (6-0) delivered a knockout blow to Grace Brethren for the second time this season, as they kept their undefeated record unblemished.

In light of the postponed doubleheader against Rappahannock on Friday, the Drifters are looking forward

to Northern Neck District play this week.

The Drifters pounded out 11 hits and scored 15 runs during their visit to Clinton, Md. Their pitching staff completed another dominating, shutout performance, as they competed a seasonal sweep over the Eagles of Grace Brethren.

“We are pleased with our ball club’s demeanor during this early three-week beginning,” varsity head coach Steve Swope said. “They have competed, the pitching staff gelled earlier than anticipated, three or four of our hitters are hitting it pretty square.”

Sophomore pitcher Gavin Lutz got his first start of the season after playing the role of closer. Lutz had saved three of his team’s five victories, until he defeated Grace Brethren as the starter, going three shutout innings, allowing three hits, while striking out five, and walking one batter. Lutz helped his cause as he walked three times, while scoring three runs.

Sophomore lefthander Jason Vickery amazingly produced his fourth straight three-hit game to lead the Drifters offensively. Hitting a hefty .555 for the season, Vickery is quickly making his mark as a consistent hitter. He produced three singles to drive in two runs, and later scored two more.

Sophomore Dion Gonzalez provided some excitement at the plate with a towering triple, and double that produced two RBIs. He also scored four runs on the base paths.

Senior outfielder and leadoff hitter Michael Jackson is currently hitting .571. He laced a double and two singles that resulted in a RBI, and later scoring two more runs. In addition, he stole four bases against Grace Brethren.

Senior third baseman Alex Gorfida added a single, two sacrifice fly RBIs, and two runs scored. Robby Sokol ripped a double and plated a run. Mark Singleton produced his first varsity hit, which was a double into left field. He also scored a run.

Davy Allison came for relief to pitch a scoreless inning that yielded a strikeout to conclude the Drifter highlights.

Results of the Tuesday game versus the defending state champions Rappahannock Raiders were not available due to press deadlines. The Drifter will complete the week on the road, as they play James Monroe on Thursday, and Washington & Lee on Friday.
