Colonial Beach varsity rips Rappahannock

The difference between second place in the Northern Neck and fourth place came into play last Thursday at the Drifterdome, as the Drifter girls’ varsity team’s (6-2, 14-4) offense made short work of the Rappahannock Raiders (2-5, 4-9). The final score, 36-25, was not indicative of the final outcome.
On Monday evening during a non-district game against King George, the Drifters defeated the Foxes 52-50.
While the Raiders’ hopes of winning a regular season championship faded in January, the Drifters are still very much alive. In order for the Drifters to overcome Northumberland (7-1, 15-5) for first place in the Northern Neck

District with two games left in the season, Lancaster (6-2, 7-10) has to beat Northumberland Thursday. The only issue is that the Indians defeated Lancaster earlier in the season, 58-49, and the scenario for a Red Devil upset against Lancaster will be tough.
Currently, the Red Devils are in third place in the Northern Neck District, with Colonial Beach a game behind first place Northumberland.
During the first quarter of the game featuring the Drifters and the Raiders, it was abundantly clear that Melissa Turner would be major source of firepower for Colonial Beach. With the exception of Jomesha Fulcher’s jumper and free throw, Turner accounted for 90 percent of the Drifters’ first points. Turner would later finish the game with 16 points. As for the visiting team, the Raiders managed to reach the scoreboard courtesy of a 3-pointer by Harmony Smith at 7:25. Smith would eventually lead all Raider scores with 15 points.
In the second quarter, the Drifters continues to dominate as forwards Jennay Shanklin and Karley Inscoe combined for 7 points to take a 18-6 lead going into halftime. Inscoe would later finish the game with 6 points.
At 4:26 in the third quarter, the Drifters had completed a 7-0 run, extending their lead to 25-6. While the Raider backcourt continued to prove ineffective in penetrating the Drifter low post, the clock soon began to be a factor. In the remaining minutes of the quarter, the Raiders offense suddenly began showing signs of life, as Lashesnia Smith led a late 15-point rally. The Raider rally was short-lived as Turner and Danielle Galloway extended the Drifter lead (34-19) with two lay-ups.
Combined with a slow-down four corner Drifter offense and an overwhelming lead, the game ended with Colonial Beach winning 36-25.
Due to press deadlines, results from the Essex-Colonial Beach game were not available. On Thursday, Colonial Beach will travel to Washington & Lee.
