Division one, Region A Football playoffs
Gridiron revitalization in the land of Black & Gold has arrived. While the Drifters’ season ended in a 45-12 loss to Franklin, the unique honor of making the Region A playoffs after a one-year hiatus is a sign that the program has redefined itself as a viable competitor in the Northern Neck District. Not only did the Black & Gold put together a six-game winning streak, but also they narrowly lost an opportunity to win the district outright before going into the playoffs.
In the past the Drifters matched up well against the Broncos, but costly mistakes could mean the difference of winning or losing.
“Franklin’s team is well put together this year, and they used that to their advantage,” Drifter varsity football head coach Jeremy Jack said. “All week we talked about the importance of game planning, but temporary lapses on the field resulted in big momentum swings in Franklin’s favor as Justin Grant returned a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in the second quarter respectively.”
After winning the coin toss, the Drifters were able to capitalize on a Franklin muffed punt as Damien Eiras scored first for Colonial Beach. On the ensuing drive, Martinez Hill scored from 1 yard out. During the next possession, the Drifters countered with a Timmy Jackson run to retake the lead 12-7. The dismay of the visiting Drifters, Franklin would score on the kickoff with a Grant 70-yard score. With less than 40 seconds remaining in the quarter, Trey Kigler scored on a 47-yard run to give the Broncos a 21-12 lead.
In the second quarter the Broncos continued to prevail over the Drifters defense with 24 unanswered points.
“We didn’t make any stops on defense, and they ran the ball incredibly well — that’s not a good mix especially when they had multiple scoring plays over 30-yards,” Jack said.
Rushing wise, the Drifters’ Timmy Jackson had a huge day with 136 yards on 19 carries, while Damien Eiras added 29 yards on six carries. Dion Gonzalez contributed 29 yards on six carries. As for the Broncos, Hill finished the game with 137 yards on 18 carries, while teammate Melquan Mitchell added 106 yards on 10 carries.
Next Friday, during the Region A, Division I quarterfinals, Franklin will take on Sussex, while Riverheads are scheduled to play Altavista. Elsewhere in the Region A playoffs, Eastern Montgomery will play Galax, while Clintwood battles Burton for the opportunity to play in the semi-finals.
The Drifters finished the season as the forth seed in the playoffs and third in the Northern Neck, and a 3-2, 6-5 record.
