Colonial Beach Middle School Drifter baseball report

The Colonial Beach Middle School baseball team is focused on reliving the heroics of three years ago when the team won the Northern Neck District Middle School Baseball Championship. Revisiting the Field of Dreams in Lancaster as champions is not merely a dream for new Drifter middle school baseball head coach Chase Davidson. Last season, the Drifters finished as runner-up in Northern Neck.
Davidson is realistic when it comes to grooming new talent. “We’re a very young team with only one eighth grader this year,” Davidson said.  “However, these kids can play baseball.  They field the ball well and really bring some good things to the table.  A lot of these guys are still getting used to playing on a big field but they’re really coming along well.  I look for our kids to consistently put the bat on the ball and put runs on the board.”

The season has not been without challenges for the upstart Drifters crew. “The one position coming into the season was we had no one with catching experience,” Davidson said. “We have been working with three of our guys and they have really worked hard at that position.  Bailey Smith, our only eighth grader, has caught on well to the position and will do most of the catching this season.  Other guys that will fill in are Dwayne Newman and Thomas Proffitt.”
Whether it’s muddy or windy, every afternoon, under the water tower, the Drifters are hard at work, as they painstakingly practice fielding, batting, and pitching skills. On the mound, Mason Delane, and Connor Lutz are the core of the Drifter six pitcher rotation. “These two guys bring some really good things to the table, especially to be as young as they are,” Davidson said.  “They both have solid off-speed pitches that compliment a quality fastball.  Other guys that will see the mound this year include Andrew Burrell, Dwayne Newman, Andrew Lewis, and Bailey Smith.”
