Colonial Beach defeats Northumberland Indians

Although the Drifters dropped a tough 3-0 loss to Lancaster, they picked up a valuable district win at Northumberland (7-3). The Black & Gold closed out the week with a non-district 6-4 win at West Point, which improved their Region A postseason seeding. The Drifters’ pitchers did not disappoint, as they served as the backbone of the defense throughout the three-game week. “Our pitching staff came up big all week, and that’s

what it will take as we head down the stretch in the District, where there are no days off,” Drifter Head Coach Steve Swope said.

Drifters 7 – Indians 3
Sophomore Kamron Smith dazzled Indian batters all day with off-speed fastballs, throwing batters off balance, as he pitched five 2/3 innings. His solid performance earned him his fourth win of the year. He allowed three runs (two earned), but struck out a season-high nine batters. At the plate, he helped his cause with a walk, and a run scored.

In the fourth inning, the Drifters broke open a 1-1 deadlock, as they sent 11 batters to the plate, resulting in six runs to take a commanding lead.

Senior Josh Thomas slammed a long two-run double to deep Leftfield, and Centerfielder Dion Gonzalez followed with a two-run bomb to deep left. The speedy senior also walked, and scored a run.

Nick Graves knocked in a run, as he finished with two singles on the day. Graves also pitched 1 ½ innings of relief work on the hill. Devin Davis and Gavin Lutz each added singles and a run scored. Carter Foster walked, and scored. Teammate Sidney Horton added two singles to round out the day.

Red Devils 3 – CB 0
For nearly five innings, it was a pitchers’ duel between Nick Graves and Lancaster ace, Colton Haydon. In the end, Haydon was the winner, as his supporting Red Devils scored a run in the top of the third, and two more in the top of the fifth, for a 3-0 victory.

Graves gave up only two hits, while fanning seven batters, after six innings of pitching. Haydon was equal to the task as he allowed two hits, and struck out seven batters.

Graves produced one of the Drifters’ hits with a first-inning double, while Devin Davis rounded out the Drifters’ offense with a seventh-inning single.

Drifters 6 – Pointers 4
Behind solid pitching performances from Gavin Lutz and Josh Thomas, the Drifters defeated West Point in a non-district away game. Lutz turned in his best outing of the season with 5 ½ quality innings, allowing four runs (two unearned), hitting one batter, and striking out six. Thomas later came in the form of a relief to close down the Pointers’ offense.

At the plate, Lutz helped himself with a two-run, two-out single in the fifth inning that tied the game.

Drifters stats included: Nick Graves, double, single, hit-by-pitch, scored run; Carlos Bermudez walked twice, scored two runs; Carter Foster walked, and scored a run; Dion Gonzalez delivered the game winning RBI single in the sixth inning that scored Jason Vickery—who opened the inning with a single.

On Thursday, the Drifters travel to Rappahannock; however, due to press deadlines results of the Tuesday night game at Essex were not available. The Drifters are now 2-1 in the Northern Neck District.
