Drifters boys’ varsity basketball off to a slow start

The first two games of the season have been tough for the Drifters (1-2) boys’ varsity basketball team. After a tough 71-56 loss to Christ Church on Tuesday, the “Black & Gold” fell prey to a 93-28 blowout from triple-A powerhouse Great Mills (2-0).
However, the “Black & Gold” bounced back against King & Queen on Monday night with a 65-47 win. Drifter standout Dylan Farinet led all scores with 22 points. His triple double included 10 assists, and 11 rebounds in just three quarters of play.
Other Drifter statistics includes: Michael Jackson, 11 points; Sedrick Smith, 10 points; Randy Ruczynski, 9 points.
On Thursday, the Drifters will host King & Queen. Game time is 6 p.m.
Great Mills game
The game began with an ominous twist of fate as the Drifters kept the Hornets in check during the first quarter, with Farinet assisting Joe Slater for 8 straight points during the final two minutes of first quarter play. However, the Drifter rally was short-lived as the Hornets delivered the game’s crushing blow in the second quarter, when they scored 18 unanswered points against the host Drifters. Although Drifter forward Randy Ruczynski managed to score a jumper in the second quarter, the Hornets piled up 20 total points, and a 46-24 halftime lead.
With a packed Drifterdome, and dream of a rally quickly fading, the Hornets used their fearsome 6’4” foursome of Kameron Barker, Mykel Harris, Brandon Teston and Basil Maye to limit the Drifter offense to just four points. After Farinet penetrated the Hornets defense with a lay-up, the visitors from Southern Maryland shifted their offense into fourth gear, going on a 30-4 run — and amassing an insurmountable 78-28 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Hornets, led by point guard Earl Castain (9 points), dropped another 13 points before running out the clock.
Barker lead all Hornet scores with 19 points, while Farinet scored 13 points for the Drifters.
