The grueling five-game week finally paid off for the Drifters. On Friday afternoon, Kevin “K-Dog” Swope got his fifth win of the season over visiting Tidewater District rival Mathews. The Drifters finish the regular season in third place.
The rainy spring weather forced the Drifters to play five of their eight total District games in a five day period of time.
Drifter head coach, Steve Swope praised his players for a hard fought battle all week. "We had to rely on our two horses at the top of our rotation to eat most of those innings," Swope said. "The job Kevin Swope and TT Carey did was simply amazing, and their will to compete was in every game."
After trailing 1-0 for three innings, the Drifters rallied back in the bottom of the third inning with four runs. Swope also added three hits, three RBI’s, which included a homerun. In addition, Chad Inscoe had a stellar performance with three hits that included a homerun to give the Drifters a 10-¡6 victory over Mathews.
The Drifters finish the regular season with a record of 9-8 overall, and 4-4 in District competition. Results of the quarterfinal District game versus Middlesex on Tuesday were not available due to press deadlines.
Drifters 6 - Pointers 4
TT Carey’s game winning RBI triple in the 7th inning over District foe West Point proved to be winning recipe for success last Wednesday. The Drifters defeated the Pointers 6-4.
Carey also scored twice against the host Pointers. On the mound, Carey and teammate Kevin Swope proved that good pitching can beat good hitting any day. With Swope pitching in relief and Carey starting, the Pointers offense was limited.
Alex Gorfida led the team in hitting as he produced four RBI’s, while Swope score once and banged out two RBI’s. Chad Inscoe also had two RBI’s, which featured a double and a single.
Mathews 10 - Drifters 0
The Drifters lost to the Blue Devils in five innings. Only four Drifters hit safely in this outing: Nick Peterson, TT Carey, Jamel Dickerson, Joe Slater.
Drifters 4 - Cavaliers 1
Cavaliers 4 - Drifters 1
The Drifters split victories with King William, with the Beach winning the first game 4-1 and the Cavaliers winning the second game, 4-1. Nick Peterson and Chad Incoe provided the run scoring hits in the first game, while Kevin Swope’s two hits and one RBI were not enough to power the Drifters past King William in the second game.
