In preparation for the 2008-2009 season, the “Black & Gold,” also known as the Drifter varsity basketball team is back and ready for action! They shifted into fourth gear last week as they notched two head-to-head scrimmages under their belts.
The Drifters will open the season this Tuesday, December 9 on the road against Lancaster and on Thursday, December 11, they will battle Amelia County in their home opener.
The Drifters first scrimmage was against four-A high school Great Mills. Great Mills is located in Southern Maryland. Great Mills outscored the Drifters 60-46 for the overall scrimmage, winning four out of six quarters.
The Drifters next game was against another big school, in the form of Battlefield District double-A James Monroe. The Yellow Jackets won five out of six quarters, with a overall score of 77-44.
Junior guard Dylan Farinet played consistently well for the Black & Gold. The talented playmaker hasn’t lost a beat, as he distributed the ball well, with a balance of sound defense and aggressive rebounding. Farinet scored in double digits during both scrimmages.
Senior guard Kevin “K-Dog” Swope nailed four three-pointers versus James Monroe, as he finished with 14 points.
Jeremy Robinson hustled and picked up some big baskets in both scrimmages. Travis Cundiff scrapped and played hard nose defense, while chipping in a couple of buckets in each scrimmage. Kenny Devers, Paul Roberson and Joe Slater rebounded well and provided sound defense in the post area against bigger post players.
Confident that his team will regain their familiar championship swagger as the season unfolds, head coach Steve Swope said, “We didn’t particularly shoot well in either scrimmage, but that will take care of itself in due time. The effort, hustle and high energy were there; however, we need to rep after rep handling it, defending it and shooting it.”
Come open the “Dome” in style on Thursday, December 11, when your Colonial Beach Drifters rock the rafters.
