CBMS Lady Drifters continue to build basketball dynasty

The atmosphere in Colonial Beach was nothing short of exciting!
For the fourth consecutive season, the Colonial Beach Middle School Drifters girls’ basketball team has defended their crown and repeated as Northern Neck District basketball champions.

Accumulating an overall record of 9-1 during the season is no small feat, but sweeping the Lancaster Red Devils throughout the 2012 season, and defeating them in the championship finals is an accomplishment that seems to have the appearance of a dynasty. “To be honest, I thought our season went really well,” Lancaster Middle School head coach Emily Webb said, “We knew it was going to be tough coming into the game, because they (CBMS) beat us both times during the season.”
What is even more amazing is that the program continues to thrive under three different coaches without missing a beat.
Elated over his team’s accomplishment, middle school girls’ basketball head coach Chad Fleming said, “I am really proud of the way they have come through as a team. They have given a 100% all season long, and of all the years I’ve coached girls’ basketball, this is one of the best teams I’ve ever had.”
In the first quarter, the Drifters offense simply out-ran and out-worked the Red Devils defense. During the first two minutes, the Drifters back court, led by Jordan McGinnnis, delivering four high percentage shots that resulted in a 8-1 lead. In the remaining moments of the quarter, Shelby Modlin and Amber Jones posted two baskets, giving the Drifters a 12-1 lead.
In the second quarter, the Drifters extended their lead to 17-3, with #23 leading the way with three points, while #5 added two foul shots. Lanisha Dameron unleashed a towering jump shot to give the Red Devils their first points from the field.
In the third quarter, as the Red Devil offense continued to sputter, the Drifters offense added ten more points courtesy of McGinnnis (4 points), Kenzie Cox and Amber Jones.
In fourth and final quarter, the Drifters offense added an additional 11 points to seal the victory. In a losing cause, Lancaster forward Diamond Taylor added three points in the quarter.
