CBHS Drifters varsity basketball begins season in sync

The Drifters varsity basketball team can best be described as a swarm of killer bees. Every man on the floor has the potential to turn a game from average to off-the-charts. The Drifters opened the season with three wins off of Middlesex, King & Queen and Washington & Lee.

The journey to their current state of dominance began several years ago, as the team struggled to regain their championship identity. After losing standout legendary players TT Carey, Tim Wilson and Dylan Farinet to graduation, the Drifters were forced to rebuild. Now that the building blocks have suddenly come together, area basketball will once again feel the thunder associated with black & gold basketball.

Now that seasoned veterans with the likes of Monte Gould, and Keane Foster have taken over the reigns of leading the team on the court, head coach Jonathan Parker is beginning to feel a familiar tingle of confidence as the season unfolds. Gould poured in 41 points, including a 13-18 performance from the foul line, against Middlesex. To his credit, Foster added 11 points.

More importantly, the team has begun to reflect the intense personality of Parker. From the tipoff, the Drifters shift into full gear with pressure defense and an endless surge of offensive energy. “Our team is strong, and I’ve seen it in them in the off season during our open gym sessions,” Parker said. “They come to put hard work in, and become better ball players.”

Drifters vs. King & Queen
Physically, the Royal Tigers appeared to be bigger than the Drifters. However, once the tipoff officially began the game, the war was on. In a span of eight minutes, the game registered four lead changes, and three ties. However, in the final three minutes of the quarter, the Drifters took their visitors to task, as they scored seven unanswered points to take a 15-11 lead. Gould’s towering three-point basket punctuated an exciting first quarter start.

In the second quarter, the Drifters extended their lead to 26-13 in the first three minutes of the quarter. As the referees attempted to catch their breath, the Drifters delivered a 22-2 run over the bewildered Royal Tigers. While the Royal Tigers attempted to sustain some level of offense, the Drifters continued to score at every point of the floor.

In the third quarter, the Royal Tigers managed to cut the Drifter lead to 56-29, which later ignited an opening fourth quarter 20-2 run. As fate would have it, the sudden surge in Royal Tiger scoring began to dwindle, as the Drifters starters reentered the game to score the game’s final eight points—and the clock became the deciding factor.

While Gould led the Drifters with 24 points, Chris Edwards led the Royal Tigers with 19 points. On Thursday, the Drifters will host King George. Game time is 6 p.m.
