Lady Foxes soccer begin 2012 season with a blast

What a difference a year makes! After barely missing the Battlefield District Tournament by a late season loss to Eastern View, the Foxes varsity girls’ soccer team is determined to challenge the best teams in the area for the top spot. “We are well aware of the challenges we face against Chancellor, Courtland and James Monroe,” Foxes head coach Dustin Pifer said. “We feel that this is our year to get over the hump, and into competition with these schools that have a long standing tradition of success in girls’ soccer.”

With the loss of only two seniors to graduation, the Foxes could be the surprise team of the district. With a core group of 11 veterans who harmoniously work together, the sky is the limit.

Denise Flately will assist Pifer in the role of assistant coach.

Gabi Caron, who led the team with 10 goals, and six assists, should provide a spark for the Foxes offense. Other returners include juniors Caeli Cusworth (nine goals, six assists), Lindsey Armentrout (seven goals, five assists), Heather Hanks (four goals, five assists), Carley Armentrout (three goals, three assists), and Shannon McLaughlin (two goals, two assists).

Defensively, the Foxes will depend on senior captain Kirsten Gulick, and juniors Rebecca Melton and Haley Armentrout. After missing her freshman year due to an injury, sophomore Brieanna Bancroft will also be returning.
Senior Kayla Childers will continue to occupy the position of goalkeeper.

In an effort to increase their depth, the Foxes have added the following players from last year’s junior varsity team: Ana Kniceley, Caroline Orr, Meghan Yanchulis and Perri Chuska.

In light of their 2-0-1 start that recently featured a 1-1 tie against Chancellor, the Foxes appear to be on the path to surpass last season’s record of 7-9 (overall), 5-9 (district).

Friday’s Chancellor game featured the Foxes rallying back with junior Lindsey Armentrout bursting through the Charger defense to place a shot into the far side of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Throughout the remaining two periods of extra-time, the Foxes midfield defense led by Caron, Kniceley, Gulick, Rebecca Melton, Meghan Yanchulis, Haley Armentrout, and Chuska shut the Chargers down. Fox goalkeeper, Childers was solid with consistent saves throughout the contest.

Prior to the Chancellor game, King George dominated Louisa with two victories (10-2, 8-1).

During the first game (March 13) against the Lions, Carley Armentrout scored three goals, Clair Larsen added two goals, while Haley Armentrout, Cusworth, and Lindsey Armentrout each scored one goal, and accounted for one assist.

On March 20, the Foxes nearly repeated their earlier performance against the Lions. Carley Armentrout led the Foxes with two goals, while Cusworth scored one goal, and two assists. McLaughlin, Lindsey Armentrout and Larsen each had one goal and one assist. In addition, Samantha Fedak, and Kniceley also scored one goal apiece. Childers has only allowed four goals thus far this season at the goalkeeper position.
