Foxes move into fourth place on senior night

After defeating Spotsylvania (68-33), and Caroline (58-44), the Foxes boys’ varsity basketball team has secured fourth place in the Battlefield District. With the district championship quickly approaching, the Foxes offense has regained its familiar swagger, by utilizing every aspect of its ability to score in key situations. King George defeated both the Knights and Cavaliers earlier, in the month of January.

Prior to the game, fans said a final goodbye to senior Foxes, Damion Carroll, L.J. Baylor, Trey Graham, and John Brown. Their contributions to the Foxes basketball program have proven

invaluable to the program’s success.

As number one seed James Monroe attempts to hold off second place Culpeper, it seems certain that Chancellor will secure third place. However, the Foxes are currently a game ahead of Eastern View, and the race for the fourth seed could be interesting as the regular season comes to a close on Friday.

On Friday, at the Foxes den, the Foxes used quickness and team speed to wear down district foe, Caroline. In the first quarter, the Cavaliers pulled out a few tricks from their fast break style of offense, as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead. With a little over four minutes remaining in the quarter, the Foxes responded by cutting the Knight lead down to 12-9. Along with a strong representation of Cavalier fans, and 30 seconds in the quarter, the Cavaliers offense suddenly came alive. By scoring two lay-ups, Jaron Moore, and Chris Thomas extended the Cavalier lead to 18-12.

With six minutes and 35 seconds left in the second quarter, the Foxes offensive hopes appeared dim when Carroll picked up his second foul. As fate would have it, forward Alon Clipper came to their rescue. The junior standout football/basketball player delivered three 3-pointers before the final buzzer, to cut the Cavalier lead to 33-28.

After Baylor posted his second jumper of the third quarter, the Foxes never looked back. With Carroll, and Anthony Howard dominating the post, the Foxes finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 45-38.

Exhausted and weary from the Foxes speed, the Cavaliers offensive efforts proved to be futile (four points), as the Foxes opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run.  In the final seconds of the game, the Foxes posted a free throw, and lay-up, courtesy of Des’Shon Brown.

The Foxes remaining games will be against Courtland, away Feb. 7, James Monroe, away, Feb. 10, and Eastern View, Feb. 13.
