KG Foxes win seven medals in State Championship

Last Saturday, at the VHSL Group AA State Indoor Track & Field Championships, at the Tolsma Track Center, in Lynchburg, 59 high schools competed for the coveted right to be called All-State. While the Foxes girls’ did not finish atop the field, they gave it their best effort, by placing 13th. Tabb was the overall winner with 56 points, 11 points off second place Blacksburg. As for the Foxes boys, they finished 26th, while Blacksburg (58) edged out Lafayette (56) for the team crown.

As for the Foxes girls, they each came out of unranked classifications to score.

The girls 4x800 meter relay team of Kristen Hornbaker, Ashley Perkins, Haley Armentrout, and Miranda Green placed fifth in the finals with a time of 9:57.78. “They waited for the other teams to falter, to move up and run the second best time in school history,” Foxes head indoor track & field coach Rudy Pekarek said.
Green, ranked 11th in the 1,000 meters, stepped it up in the last 200 meters, blazing ahead of the pack for a fourth place, All-State finish, and a new school record time (3:06:47).

The girls 4x400 meter relay team (not ranked), comprised of Brittany Williams, Mia Meyer, Miranda Green and Lindsey Armentrout, finished sixth with a time of 4:12:75. To reach the All-State final eight they had to win their heat convincingly. Williams set the pace in the first leg with the fastest time (1:01) she has ever run. Her relay teammates finished the heat in the same dominate fashion.

Lindsey Armentrout established a new school record in the pole vault, with a fourth place All-State finish of 10’ 6”.

As for the boys, senior DeMarcus Epps was lone Fox All-State qualifier in the 500 meters with a fourth place finish (1:08.02).

The top Foxes medalist were Green with three, and Lindsey Armentrout with two. Overall the Foxes girls had an exceptional day, as seven girls out of the 10 competed to earned medals. “With every meet you’re going to have excitement, and you’re going to have people doing better than they should have—and you’re going to have some disappointment too,” Pekarek said

Next season the State meet in Lynchburg will have a new format of classification. Instead of a Group AA classification, four individual classifications will be competing with 1A-3A combined and 4A competing separately in the new VHSL classification system.
