KGHS Foxes cross country teams are up and running

When it comes to the hopes, dreams and aspirations of the Foxes cross country team of 67 runners, Cathy Binder has good reason to be optimistic.

“This year our goal is to feature two Battlefield District champions, Haley Armentrout, and Tyler Lumpkin,” the King George High School head coach said.
Given the fact that Lumpkin is a seasoned distance runner, compliments of both cross country and track and field, and Armentrout’s 2010 performance featured a

trip to the State Championships, the Foxes could be Cinderella factor in this year’s final results.

Binder has further reason to smile with the participation rate at an all-time high.
Currently the Foxes feature the largest cross country team ever assembled in recent years — their presence alone is a monumental feat.

“It’s really good to have a team this size, because if you want to build a good program such as Mountain View, you need a team this size to pool from,” Binder said. ‘The statistical odds favor the triple-A school, because they have a talent base of over 2,000 kids.”

Other returning Fox veterans include: Jacob Williams, Lindsey Armentrout, Ian Kopefinger, Kirsten Gulick, Eric Rose, Tabitha Kim, Anna Kniceley, Miranda Green, Kirsten Hornbaker, Brandon Desque, Nicole Brem. Foxes boys’ captains include Lumpkin and Desque, and Kim and Gulick will serve as the girls’ captains.

The ace up the sleeve that could help the Foxes during the course of the season is the difficulty with other teams attempting to compete on their course. According to Binder, the Foxes feature the toughest course in the entire district.

“The course has helped our program, because compared to our course, other courses around the district are easy — our course is the hardest course to run on, ” Binder said. “It’s mental — when you can run up hills, you can run on anything.”

The season will be officially underway Sept. 7, when the entire district will compete in a mini-Battlefield District meet at Spotsylvania High School. Coaches from the entire district will evaluate their runners against the rest of the district. A new twist has been added this season, as the district will honor the team with the best record and a district championship meet champion. Last year, the Foxes girls finished second in the Battlefield District Championship. Haley Armentrout contributed to the Foxes’ second place finish (63) and captured second place District Runner-up honors with a time of 6:32.5.
