Cyclones overwhelm Foxes in JV district baseball championship

It was bitter pill to swallow for the Foxes. After losing to Eastern View 10-6 for the Battlefield District Championship, the Foxes were left with empty hearts and the realization that they will have to face the Cyclones again next year — but next time most of them will be wearing varsity uniforms.

“It was great game,” Foxes junior varsity head coach Nick Simmons said. “Our boys came out and played their hearts out. It proved to fun to watch.”

Last season, when both teams met in the junior varsity, the Foxes narrowly defeated the Cylcones 2-1. However, this season, both

teams split regular season victories.

With home field advantage and the partisan Fox crowd there to cheer them on, it appeared the Cyclones were arguably the underdogs. However, the Cyclones delivered three runs in the first inning.  Jordan Orndorff and Dylan Wine collectively produced two hits that resulted in three runs. Orndorff would finish the game with two hits and two RBIs.

In the following inning, the Foxes produced one run after Lane Ward scored Michael Hundley on a single. During the bottom of the third inning, the Foxes crept closer to the lead as a Cyclone throwing error scored Zack Kegley.

Jordi Estes rocked the visiting Cyclones with a towering triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, which produced runs, closing the Cyclone lead to 6-5.

In the top of the sixth inning, after the Foxes to take lead in the previous inning by stranding runners, the Cyclones opened up their offense to score four runs. After two throwing errors and a RBI single by Justin Gardiner, the Cyclones would extend their lead to 10-5. Gardiner would ultimately lead all Eastern View hitting by going 3-4 at the plate, which resulted in three RBIs.

Guillermo Martinez picked up the pitching win for the Cyclones. Martinez pitched three and quarter innings that yielded five runs, five hits, one strikeout and four walks. The Foxes used three pitchers in a losing cause.

The Foxes finished the season with an overall record of 15-2.
