Lex Estes throws a perfect game against James Monroe

After defeating James Monroe (0-8) 14-0 on Friday, thanks to a perfect game thrown by Lex Estes, the Foxes varsity baseball team (4-2, 4-5) has turned their season around. After starting the season 0-5, the Foxes are on a four-game winning streak. Earlier in the week, the Foxes ended Battlefield Division leading

Courtland’s three-game win streak with a dominating 8-2 victory.

Estes controlled the Yellow Jacket hitters with control and command of the strike zone that resulted in 10 strikeouts over a course five innings.

“He threw within himself by pounding the strike-zone,” Foxes varsity baseball head coach Thad Reviello said.

Over the spring break vacation, the Foxes will play a double header of sorts against two different schools; at 3 p.m. they will travel to  Douglass Freeman, and at 7 p.m. they will travel to Hermitage to play their final game of the day.

On the mound with Damian Caroll and Estes, the Foxes are solid. At the plate, the Foxes could potentially change the face of district. Of the five losses they have encountered, only one, Riverbend, ended in a 10-run mercy ruling.

The Yellow Jackets’ season has not gone well. Prior to facing the Foxes on Friday, they have struggled at the plate and on the mound. As fate would have it, the Foxes’ starting pitcher, Estes, would enjoy a career day on the mound by pitching a flawless game. At times, it seemed as though the Yellow Jackets batters were aimlessly swatting their bats with the hope of making contact.

In the bottom of the first inning, Dylan Dombrowskas slashed a standup double into left field that scored Tyler Trustlow. Later, in the bottom of the second inning, the Foxes picked up three additional runs when Theo Klopsis hit a three-run homerun.

As the Yellow Jacket batters struggled to make contact, the Foxes offense continued to wreak havoc on James Monroe pitching. The Foxes scored a total of ten runs in the fourth inning. After a single by David Hunt that scored Tyler Magill, Dombrowkas lined a single into centerfield that extended the Fox lead to 7-0. Estes helped his cause by scoring two runs with a double. The 10-run rule was quickly becoming imminent, as Carroll added the Foxes’ 10th run of game with a RBI double.

In hopes of slowing down King George, James Monroe brought in relief pitcher David Beck. Later in the inning, the Foxes scored with a single from pinch hitter Brandon Bennett and an RBI single from Tyler Trustlow to extend their lead to 12-0. With bases loaded, David Hunt provided the Foxes’ final run with a base hit.
