KG Foxes win Regional Basketball Championship

Hoorah for the King George High School boys’ basketball team!  The Foxes won the District 4, Region 1 Championship on Friday night against top-seeded Tabb High School in a convincing 59-49 finale after making the 100-mile trek to Yorktown two nights in a row.

Thursday night the Foxes defeated Yorktown’s Grafton High School, 54-48, in the semi-final game.  Many dedicated Fox fans made the long drive to cheer their team on.

“The kids know the King George fans are out there,” Head Coach Josh Luzier said.  During the championship game the King George fans rivaled the

home team in loudness and enthusiasm.

Following the championship game Fox co-captain Matt Mohr expressed his sentiment for the Fox fans: “I love them all!”

The Friday night win gives the Foxes a ticket to the State Tournament with their opening game (quarter final) to be played on March 4 or 5 at VCU’s Siegel Center against the Region 2 Runner-up, Liberty-Bealeton.   The date and time will be announced on Tuesday.

The Friday night win gives the Foxes a ticket to the State Tournament with their opening quarter final game to be played on Saturday, March 5, at 3:45 p.m. at VCU’s Siegel Center against the Region 2 Runner-up, Liberty-Bealeton. Quarterfinal tickets will be $8.

It’s a big deal to earn a spot in the state basketball tournament.  The 2011 KGHS team will be only the fourth boys team from King George to earn the honor since the 1970 squad won the State Championship (1971, 1997 and 2002).  This year’s team consists of a very talented and devoted roster of players, many of whom have been playing together since middle school.   They want to prolong the season by winning three more games, making it the second time in KGHS history to bring home the State Championship.

“We’ve dreamed of winning the State Championship and have worked hard to get there,” junior Damion Carrol said.

The Foxes statistics are impressive.  The team has averaged 21.4 steals per game, 19.2 assists per game, 9.1 blocks per game, and 56.3 rebounds per game this year, ranking first in the state in each of these categories on the MaxPreps online statistics site for high school sports.  Their aggressive man-to-man defense is a catalyst for many of these notable statistics.

“I think that our intense pressure on the ball (i.e. Wayne Wyatt on the point guard of other teams) results in bad passes and the rest of the team does a great job of lying in the wait and jumping the passing lanes,” coach Luzier said, explaining how his players are so successful in stealing the ball.  “That in turn, usually results in our fast break and points in the paint.”

On Friday night’s championship game King George made 11 of their 22 baskets from inside the lane, many resulting from fast-break layups.
The team’s shared responsibility for Friday night’s 10-point win could not have been more apparent.  Staying true to their game plan, seven of the Foxes contributed to their imposing statistics, each with at least one steal and assist, and no one with fewer than five rebounds.  KGHS had a total of 20 steals, 20 assists, 12 blocks and 64 rebounds.

Co-captain and Battlefield District co-player of the year DJ Lewis grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds while Kelsey Monroe and Damion Carrol pulled down 12 each.  Monroe and Carrol blocked four shots each.  Wayne Wyatt, Matt Mohr and Lewis each stole the ball four times and Wyatt, Lewis and Carrol racked up four assists each in the championship game.  Scoring was shared as well between the same seven players, Wyatt and Lewis adding a team-high 13 points each, Carrol with nine points, Monroe and Mohr scored 8 points each, LJ Baylor contributed 6 points, and Derrick Joines hit 2 points.

“If we each play our role, everything will fall into place,” said co-captain Kelsey Monroe of the upcoming schedule.

Make plans now to go down to Richmond this weekend to rally around your King George Foxes in their quest to go all the way.
