KGMS boy’s basketball team win title

The road to success ended with the spoils of a title for the Foxes.
On Saturday, at the Culpeper Middle School gymnasium, the King George Middle School boys’ basketball team completed its season by winning the coveted annual Culpeper Winter Classic.
Prior to the tournament, the Foxes redeemed an earlier loss to Walker Grant Middle School with a decisive victory. During the two-day tournament, the Foxes defeated Floyd T. Binns (45-42) Friday, and Culpeper Middle School (48-27) the following day to win the title.

The last time the KGMS boys’ basketball team won the title was in the 2005-2006 season. The Foxes finished the season with a 9-3 record, which included an undefeated home performance.
The victory over Floyd T. Binns was no walk in the park for King George, by any stretch of the imagination. After trailing for three quarters and facing a 32-21 lead going into the final quarter, the Foxes were forced to put their two top players back into game. Although De’Quan Whiting and Nana Gayan were hindered with four fouls apiece, they rallied their team to score 24 points in the fourth quarter.
“The team made an amazing comeback, and showed amazing fortitude in front of a hostile crowd,” KGMS head coach Chris Zylonis said.
On Saturday, the Foxes faced an even tougher team in the form of Culpeper. At the end of the first quarter, Culpeper lead 8-9, but the Foxes stood poised to take the lead, 18-12 at halftime. Throughout the third and fourth quarter, the Foxes offense overwhelmed their foes from the west. In the end, the Foxes defeated Culpeper in every aspect of the game to win 48-27.
Tournament honors for the following Fox players were bestowed after the game: Most Valuable Player – De’Quan Whiting, 31 points, 22 assists, six steals; All Tournament Defensive Player – Nana Gayan, 23 points, 26 rebounds, four blocks, three steals; All Tournament Team – Juan Parker, 10 points, 31 rebounds; Zach Johnson, 10 points, four steals.
The Foxes are more than just a team; they are a group of young athletes who have known each other since they began playing parks and recreation basketball. Coach Zylonis continues to encourage his players to remain strong in the classroom, during and long after the season is over. Out of 14 players, each kid averaged three A’s, totaling 44 A’s for the entire team.
“While other teams were losing kids to grades, our kids excelled in the classroom.
