KG Foxes overtake JM Yellow Jackets in double overtime

It was an epic varsity Battlefield District boys’ basketball battle that will be talked about for ages. Long before the Foxes celebrated their 75-69 victory over James Monroe, there was war within a war that ensued for four quarters and two overtime periods. In the end, the quicker, more athletic Foxes’ will to win overcame their district visitors from Fredericksburg. DJ Lewis led all scoring with 27 points.
The Foxes are currently tied for second place with Courtland with a record of 5-4, 10-3-1, and it seems that the Joshua Luzier era in boys’ basketball has the potential to yield the next dominant Fox basketball team. Cautiously optimistic, Luzier spoke highly of his team after game.

“It was a classic win — after going down to watch [James Monroe] play against Culpeper and see the kind of fight they had to put up against them, I knew we were in for a hard-fought battle,” Luzier said. “Although we didn’t match up five for five against them, I thought my guys played good outside defense the entire game. I had to reel them in at halftime to run our set system of plays, and after we started doing that we began to pick them apart. We were coming back inch by inch. We are not the same ole time we used to be by coming back with one shot; we’re team that will crawl back on our hands and knees and fight for that win.”
After dismantling Colonial Beach on Saturday, 99-52, the Foxes have extended their win streak to seven. Interestingly, the last time the Foxes lost was more than a month ago to Caroline (69-66). Results of the Tuesday night Caroline game were not available due to press deadlines. The Foxes will resume action when they travel to Chancellor on Friday, Jan. 21.
In the first quarter, after two lay-ups from Tyrone Bates, the Yellow Jackets seemed to penetrate the Fox defense with ease as they took a 9-3 lead. The Foxes responded with two fast-break lay-ups from Lewis to cut the lead to 7-9 at 2:47. However, with 6 foot 6 Alers controlling the boards on both ends of the court, the Yellow Jackets managed to hold on to a 15-16 to end the first quarter.
With the lead and momentum swinging back and forth, Jaamir Bumbry, Devin Blake, and Daquan Lucas combined for three 3-point scores apiece to take a 28-36 lead at halftime.
The third quarter represented a series of ups and downs for King George. After falling behind by 12 points, the Foxes rallied with an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to cut the lead to 38-42.
Behind by three points at the start of the fourth quarter, Kelsey Monroe’s jumper at 4:16 gave the Foxes a slim 48-47 lead. With the partisan crowd cheering them on, Carroll and Lewis scored two lay-ups to give the Foxes a 58-55 lead with 23 seconds left to play. However, to the Foxes dismay, Lucas’ fade away 3-pointer with 13 seconds left sent the game into overtime at 58-58.
After the Foxes post men, Lewis, Monroe, Carroll and Wayne Wyatt, scored crucial points, King George took a 66-64 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded with a jumper from Bumbry, who also drew foul on the play. After Luzier called timeout to give Bumbry time to think about scoring the winning basket, the standout forward promptly missed the free throw, sending the game into the second overtime.
During the second overtime period, the Foxes left no doubt they were the dominant team on the floor. Combining speed and execution, the Foxes went on a 7-0 run to seal the victory. Lewis scored the game’s final points with two free throws.
