King George Foxes field hockey forges ahead

King George high school field hockey news update

Taking giant steps forward with the eventual hope of contending for the district championship one day, the King George High School (KGHS) field hockey program is steadily making progress. Rebuilding for the future with a speedy, athletic junior varsity program, and the promise of a spring season feeder system in the form of the King George Youth Athletic Association could impact the Fox field hockey program in positive direction.
Last week, the Fox varsity field hockey team lost in overtime, 1-0 to Eastern View;

however, on the junior varsity side, Jackie Collins scored the lone goal for the Foxes, which gave them a 1-0 victory.
A tough regimen of conditioning has created new life within the ranks of the Fox field hockey squad. Along with running two miles a day, the Fox coaching staff is focused on encouraging their athletes to attend off-season clinics and sharpen their field skills at the Fredericksburg Field Hour.

Instead of coaching current and aspiring field hockey players in August, Fox varsity head coach Dianna Blair will have the advantage of coaching players during the beginning of May, during the debut of the KGYAA field hockey program.
“The more experienced the girls have, they will be able to compete against area schools who compete year-round,” Blair said.
As for the junior varsity, the Foxes are gaining confidence. With scores from Sarah Pelto, Elizabeth Hill, Jamie Herman, Brenna Haas, Jessica Middleton, Nicole Wood, Jackie Collins and Lillie Baggetts-Clift throughout the season, the Foxes are increasingly becoming a team to reckon with.
“Our attitudes are great, and the comradery is above and beyond,” JV coach Christine Middleton said. “Before a game, they get in a circle, and make a promise that they won’t let the other team have the ball within 25 yards of the goal.”
While every school in the district has had the luxury of playing at home, the Foxes have had to use Sealston Elementary School as their home field —  essentially making them a travel team throughout the season.
Also, on the horizon, the Foxes are currently in the planning stages of hosting field hockey jamboree competition in August — playing on four fields at once. The capital generated from a jamboree would be given to the KGHS field hockey program.
On Monday afternoon, Courtland defeated both Fox varsity (6-0), and junior varsity (3-0). Currently the varsity’s record is 3-9, 3-11, while their junior compatriots are 4-6-3.
The Foxes field hockey team celebrated senior night on Monday, as they played host to district rival Courtland. The Foxes will play their final game of the season on Wednesday, at James Monroe. Foxes honored for senior night are as follows: Julia Martin, Elizabeth King, Carolyn Donnelly, Carolyn Degrazie.
