Foxes volleyball starts season on the road

The King George volleyball teams began their season with two away competitions.  They first travelled to Stafford, in a district competition, to play the Indians.  Three days later, the teams took part in the Fifth Annual Lion/Knight Volleyball Classic.  The varsity games were played at Louisa County High School with the JV games held at Charlottesville High School.
The King George varsity team, with just five returning players, will face a challenging season against stronger Battlefield District foes.  Coach Brandee Weaver will be looking to her

veterans to provide the lead for the new players this season.  The Foxes JV team may find things even more difficult with only two returning players.  Coach Krista Mikula will be trying to transform the young team’s enthusiasm into wins.
The King George Varsity ran into a hot-serving Stafford team.  The Indians took set 1 (25-11) with a string of players smacking solid serves leading to multiple rally points.  The second set was more of the same with the Foxes facing even tougher serves and stronger rallies by Stafford.  At one point, the Lady Indians had a run of 10 consecutive points including a couple aces (Stafford 25-5).  In the third Set, KG came to life with strong serving and solid play.  Long rallies were the mark of this set with both teams playing rock-hard on their side of the net.  In a close set, the Indians won 25-19, taking the match.  Taylor Macauley and Rachael Webb were the Foxes’ most effective servers.  Individual player stats were not available.
The JV Foxes had a successful night, coming back from a first set loss (25-18) to win the night’s match.  In the second set, KG pulled out the win, 26-24.  These first two sets were back-and-forth battles resulting in the split victories.  The final set was all Foxes as the JV ladies won going away (15-6), for their first District win.  Although Stafford seemed a little stronger in the long rallies, King George dominated the serving.  Leading servers were Amber Smith (two aces), Alli Trainum (two aces) and Carley Armentrout (ace).
Individual player stats were not available.
The Lion/Knight Classic was an eight-team tournament featuring teams from Monticello, Charlottesville, Fauquier, Liberty, Park View, Nelson, Louisa and King George.  The Aug. 28 tournament began with “pool” play at 9 a.m.  The Foxes’ teams would find this tournament a good learning experience, playing teams from larger schools and against players with travel team and club team backgrounds.
The varsity faced very tough competition from the very beginning of the tournament.  The extensive experience of their opponents was evident.  The Foxes were only able to grab one set win during pool play, ending with three losses.  Their problems continued in the consolation match resulting in a loss.  Throughout the tournament, King George exhibited flashes of solid play, but couldn’t sustain that level.  The Foxes individual player talent just couldn’t mesh in consistent team play.  Their success will depend on folding the good quality player efforts into a solid team effort.
The JV team had a difficult day, with three losses in pool play.  The consolation match resulted in another loss.  In spite of their record, the JV Foxes actually played well in many of the matches, including a three-set loss to Charlottesville. This “under fire” experience will serve them well in District competition.
The Stafford Indians will ride into King George Wednesday to again challenge the Foxes in a Battlefield District competition.
