KG Speed & Conditioning Camp pushes players to the limit

Last Saturday morning, on the grounds of the King George County Stadium, the testosterone levels were high, as men both large and small participated in another edition of the King George Speed & Conditioning Camp. Amid the litany of strength, agility, and speed drills, the camp represents a life-changing experience for players and coaches

alike.

For Tim Coleman, Camp Director, and Fredericksburg Christian School Head Football Coach, the goal is to repurpose the player’s body movements, while incorporating strength and speed. “What we’re doing today is a mix of both speed and strength,” Coleman said. “We have linemen focused on strength competition, while skill players (quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, cornerbacks) concentrate on speed work.”

The resistance and flexibility drills featured at the camp included ballistic warm-ups, broken ladders, tire flips, deadweight work, three-cone sessions, sandwich bags, pro shuttles, and kick slides.

“It’s all about resistance, over-speed, and contrast training,” Coleman said. “It gives players a chance to work on specific drills for the sport they play.”

Both the King George High School football staff and members of the Fredericksburg Christian School football staff assisted Coleman. For four hours, players used both the weight-training room and the stadium facilities.

The camp is open to everyone, including players from recreation and middle-school developmental leagues.

“We’ve been doing a lot of speed camps here, but this week we decided to put together a strongman competition specifically for the linemen,” KGHS Head Football Coach Jeff Smith said. “Linemen usually don’t get a lot of publicity, because the camp is usually geared to quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers.”

Some of the more notable players who were present included Battlefield All-District standouts, Quarterback/Middle Linebacker Corey Henderson and Running Back/Cornerback Jordan Estes.

Another feature of the camp were the seven-on-seven competitions, which took place after the conditioning drills. Instead of traveling to Colonial Forge to compete, the Foxes are currently hosting seven-on-seven competitions every Thursday at KGHS. This location allows the players and coaches easier access to offseason competitions, and the physical pleasure of playing on artificial turf. Last week, the Foxes hosted players from Courtland and Spotsylvania. On Thursday, Caroline, Eastern View, Courtland and Spotsylvania are expected to play.

Smith’s ultimate goal is to generate a championship football team by preparing them during the offseason against the same players they will confront in the fall sports’ season. “I am not worried about what they (rival teams) see from us, or what we see from them,” Smith said. “I am concerned about our team getting better offensively and defensively.”

Smith’s expectations from the camp are exceedingly high; however, with the core of talent that exists on his team, his dreams of hoisting up the hardware associated with a championship may be closer than you think.

“If we can take care of our responsibilities in seven-on-seven competitions, once we get into live games, everything will fall into place,” Smith said.

The Foxes Varsity Football Team finished the 2012 season with a 9-3 overall record, and a berth to the Regional Championship.
