Neither rain, nor snow or three canceled swim meets could keep the 2009-2010 King George High School swim team from its destiny. After sweeping the Battlefield District swim championships for the third year in a row, it’s safe to say that King George is still at the top of the aquatic food chain. As the Foxes girls’ delivered eight first place victories out of a possible 11 for 168.5 points, their male teammates crushed their rivals using a compliment of second to fifth place finishes for 143 points.
A consummate achiever all season, sophomore Leann Miller led the field with victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.68) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.83). Arguably the most significant performer at the meet, Miller contributed for a first place finish by swimming the anchor in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay events.
As for the Foxes boys’ team, junior Tyler Grigg earned the 100-yard butterfly title (59.94), while the team of Joel Morrisett, Will Zimmerman, Dylan Manard, and David Hunt won the 200-yard freestyle relay title.
The big question that continues to haunt the district is how long will it take before the rest of the area catches up to the Foxes’ level of dominance? With James Monroe vastly improving all levels of its swim program, the progression of rival talent may soon impact the Fox dynasty. During the district championship, James Monroe captured five first place boys’ crowns (200-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 400-yard relay).
Given the equation of the Potomac Raiders year-round swim team plus the summer swims of Eels and Sharks, barring a major geographical development, the Foxes will have a firm grasp on the district for years to come. In addition, factoring in the King George YMCA’s aquatic facilities, the Foxes swim program has inadvertently created the perfect environment for recruiting new swimmers.
Entering into the 2009-2010, the Foxes had four All-District swimmers from the previous season (Leann Miller, Rachael Webb, Christiana Bentz, Alexandria Bentz) who happened to be underclassmen. The core of the girls’ swim team will be intact and stronger than ever.
The next stop for the Foxes is the VHSL Group A/AA Boys and Girls Swim & Dive Championships at Old Dominion University, on Saturday, February 18-20.
