King George volleyball ascends to the collegiate level

The Foxes volleyball program just elevated its court skills to a new level. On June 17-19, in the King George High School gymnasium, new University of Mary Washington head volleyball coach, Matt Troy and his staff reintroduced college level volleyball to 47 area high school volleyball players, from eight different schools - King George, Colonial Forge, Courtland, Chancellor, Faith Baptist, Fredericksburg Christian, Riverbend and North Stafford.
“Drew Wine came to me about coming here and teaching a camp,” Troy said. “We were excited to reach out from the University of Mary Washington, and get that in play. We’ve been able to teach them some collegiate level skills, but at the same token, some basic volleyball skills.”

The interest in the sport eclipsed the 2011 Wake Forest volleyball camp that featured 33 girls.

The Foxes representation was comprised of aspiring eighth graders, junior varsity and varsity players. Thrilled with the new skills offered by the camp, Sarah Woodruff, a key player for the Foxes said, “I think it’s good for our community, and it’s going to be valuable in building the volleyball community in King George.”

Volleyball drills consisted of individual repetitions and small group games (six player system) where players could get comfortable touching the ball.

Excited about a new college approach in volleyball fundamentals, camp coordinator, and KGHS junior varsity volleyball head coach, Drew Wine said, “The camp is strong in fundamentals, with a four-step approach, where your feet go from right to left. They described it as a walk, splash, splash. It was likened to jumping in a puddle.”

Another featured drill was the comparison of arm swing motion to a bow and arrow, where the player’s arm rotates on an axis. “As we do repetition after repetition, it suddenly becomes second nature,” Wine said. “You don’t have to think about movement anymore, because you’re now in the right spot.”

A huge emphasis was also placed on the science associated with blocking skills. “They taught us how to take a three step block, and turn your feet so that you’re going to the net,” Wine said. “To start, you need to land with your feet turned before you get back to the position of attack.”

The camp is co-sponsored by both KGHS and the King George Parks and Recreation Department. “The cool thing about working closely with Parks and Recreation, is that it was easy to provide an affordable price of $130,” Wine said. “After getting so many kids from other schools, which generates a decent amount of revenue, it allows us to bring in professional coaches.”

During the off-season, many Foxes volleyball players were involved with the Virginia Flyers travel club team. Coaches who manage the Virginia Flyers include: Steve Owen (director), Susan Koban & Brian Miniuk (U-15 team), and Wine & Samantha Gregory (U-18 team).

Along with attending a recent coaches volleyball clinic in Arlington, Wine is thrilled at the impact that the program’s off-season will have on his program. “Jill (Wine’s wife and varsity head volleyball coach) went to a clinic recently that was run by Gold Medal Square,” Wine said. “They are the Mount Rushmore of volleyball coaching. We learned a lot from the camp, where we could bring knowledge back to the kids to make things simple.”
