Lady Fox JV feeder basketball program soars
The King George Foxes Junior Varsity girls’ basketball team has been enjoying a winning season this year, going 5-3 so far, posting 1 win and 1 loss last week against foes James Monroe High School and Courtland, respectively.
In last Tuesday’s game at James Monroe, King George came out strong, taking a ten point lead to the locker room at halftime. In the second half, James Monroe chiseled their way back into the game and within two points of the Lady Foxes. King George battled hard to hold on to the lead and earn the victory, 26-24. Jazzmine Johnson was the leading scorer for the Lady Foxes with 12 points.
In Friday night’s home game, the Lady Foxes were unable to pull out a win against the Courtland Cougars in a very closely contested game, losing 22-25. After holding a one point lead at halftime, and being tied at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the game remained close all the way to the final stretch.
Head Coach Christine Gathers expressed pride in her team, saying that they work well together as a whole, in-school and out-of-school. “They have been working hard and have come a long way, stepping up when needed,” said Coach Gathers of her very young team. “Everyone has contributed in one way or another.”
Five of the ten players are in the eighth grade. Eighth grader Erica Davis and freshman Victoria Taylor have been doing a great job at getting the ball down the court, according to Coach Gathers, and eighth grader Emily Hall has had a big impact on the team, in the game and on the bench, as she is always encouraging her team.
This is the half-way point in the season for the Lady Foxes. With eight games left, they plan to continue to work hard to win every game possible, with hopes to earn the right to play in the Battlefield District JV Championship game once again.
On Friday, January 23, the Lady Foxes will travel to Spotsylvania High School for a 6:00pm game. The next home game will be on Wednesday, January 28, against Eastern View High School at 6:00pm. Go Lady Foxes!
