Foxes poised to win their second District title in row
After sweeping both girls’ and boys’ Battlefield Districts swim championships, the Fox swim team is back to reload for another exciting season. With a total of 68 swimmers on the current roster, featuring 34 returning veterans, the Foxes are set to compete against the best the District has to offer.
Although the following graduates of 2008 contributed to a successful 2008 swim season, thanks to travel swim team such as the Raiders, Eels and Sharks, the fountain of talent at King George High School will continue to thrive: Jackie Hynson, Emily Cooper, Emily Jones, Matt Cook, Stuart Shippee, Brian Lusher, Mike Biffel and David Morrisett.
Cook placed among the top eight swimmers in the state in his individual event.
Fox head coach Bernardes is a firm believer in off-season swim competition. “Anytime you have an athlete that has a strong cardiovascular base and great technique, their skills will always come in handy for swim meets, as well as helping others achieve more than they thought possible,” Bernardes said. “These swimmers can play a vital role in leading by example.”
Presently, second year coach Bernades and her staff; Elizabeth Guthrie, Jennifer Rasnake, Ken Novell [volunteer] are hard at work, Tuesday and Thursday, drilling their team into shape at the new Y.M.C.A. in King George. The new facility is a boost for the Foxes. Not only will the facility accommodate quad and tri-meets, but its close proximity to the new King George High School will encourage more aspiring Fox swimmers to try out for the team. Unfortunately the pool area is not large enough to host District meets, where host and visiting families would require seating.
All swim lanes at the Y.M.C.A. meet Virginia High School League requirements. With the full compliment of aerobics, and workout facilities available at the Y.M.C.A., all Fox sports programs will benefit in one way or another. “They have been gracious host, and its been exciting to see how many kids from the area are using the facility,” Bernardes said.
The Foxes will host District rival James Monroe on December 5th, at the Y.M.C.A. in King George to kick off the 2008-2009-swim season.
