Last week when the July 9, 2014 Journal was sent to be printed, the printer's press broke and we had problems with the printed version of the 7-9-14 paper.

However, the press was fixed, and our July 16, 2014 editions are out as usual.

Longfield Rd. slated for redesign

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is in the design stages of moving the entrance and exit of Longfield Road (Rt. 631) on the north side (near the King George County line) of Ridge Rd. (Rt. 205).

The primary purpose of this project is to realign Rt. 631 with Rt. 205 to an approximate 90-degree-angle.

Currently at this intersection, aligning with the current road, drivers turning left onto Rt. 205 from Rt. 631 are unable to see traffic to their right without looking through rear passenger windows.

This realignment will move the intersection approximately one-tenth of a mile to the southeast. A right-turn lane will also be constructed on Rt. 205 for vehicles turning onto Rt. 631.

The project will cost a total of $2,257,403, using funds allocated for roadwork in Westmoreland County. $800,000 of this amount will be used for engineering of the roadway plans. $137,451 will be used to acquire the right-of-way that will be used, and for utility relocation. $1,219,952 will be used for construction.

Jason Williams, District Location and Design Engineer for VDOT said, “This project has been planned for some time.” Environmental concerns raised by nearby property owners were addressed in the meeting with VDOT, which was held on Jun. 11 at the town meeting room.

The project is scheduled to begin in Jun. of 2015. Anyone with questions or concerns may contact Greg Huffman at the Fredericksburg Office of Project Management at (540) 374-3369.
