Montross Market Days a success this weekend

Since Montross Market Days returned to the Courthouse Square in Montross after a 20-year intermission, the 4th of July weekend brought some of the best market days ever.

“I thought it was the best market yet! It couldn’t miss: a long July 4th weekend, sunshine, personable

vendors with fabulous products, kids, dogs, live music, visitors and locals,” Montross Market Days Coordinator Becky Nelson said.

“The Market is doing exactly what we all hoped it would do: bring folks into town in support of local people and products and also to serve as a social gathering. Hopefully, it will get people thinking about creating and supporting more permanent commercial establishments. The town seems ripe for that,” Nelson said.

“The market has acted as an example of what can evolve if people are committed. I am so thankful for the enthusiastic support from the town, the county, vendors and visitors to the Market. When I agreed to help to coordinate Market Days, I was a bit nervous, but that has changed to nervous excitement and extreme pride in the Town of Montross and its people,” Nelson said.

Discontinued in the 1990s, the Greater Montross Partnership for Revitalization has revived the old-style courthouse market where local vendors can display produce, baked goods, plants, crafts, collectibles and antiques. The Market Days are held the first Saturday of every month from May through September.

“It’s good for our town and it’s good for our county,” Carol Chandler, owner of the Carrot Cottage, located on Courthouse Square, said. “It provides a center of excitement right in the middle of the county. It encourages locals and visitors to come to Montross, and it helps our economy.”

Locals, visitors and vendors crowded into Courthouse Square over the 4th of July weekend. Crowds were large and steady. Among those selling their goods on the square were Lois’ Produce, J and J Greenhouses, Friends of Westmoreland State Park, artist Nana Gail Lauer, Homeward Bound and Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Big Billy Duck and Goose Calls, Operation Inasmuch and Julia Forest Handcrafts.
